Adam Cole is still the ROH World Champion and will defend the title against Japan’s Jushin “Thunder” Liger this weekend following a victory over Kevin Steen at Global Wars.

Cole, who has held the title since September 2013, pinned Steen following a superkick to the back of the head on Sunday’s pay-per-view.

Cole’s victory was met with disdain by the partisan Toronto audience, who heavily favoured their countryman Steen in the bout.

Both men brawled to the outside of the ring shortly after the match began, where Steen rammed Cole groin-first against the ring posts.

After introducing Cole to all four of the posts, Steen moved the action back into the ring and stepped up his intensity as the match progressed, eventually drawing inspiration from El Generico and delivering a top-rope brainbuster to Cole.

Shockingly, Cole was able to kick out when Steen tried to pin him, which led “Mr Wrestling” to attempt a Package Piledriver.

Steen’s signature move would be his undoing when Cole over-rotated, landing on his feet behind Steen in prime position for a superkick to the back of the head which left Steen unconscious and unable to kick out when Cole covered him to retain the ROH World Championship.

The ROH Global Wars replay is available from Ustream at a cost of $15 USD.
