Cena wins 15th world title at Money in the Bank
With a hometown crowd backing him, as well as millions watching on pay-per-view around the world, Cena overcame The Authority’s alliance of Kane and Randy Orton to unhook both title belts and be able to call himself WWE Champion for the first time since August last year.
The eight-man title match was extremely physical. Orton suffered a cut on his head that required 12 staples to close after being hit with a ladder by Roman Reigns.
After being briefly looked at by the ringside physician, Orton returned to the ring and dragged Cesaro off the ladder, catching him with a mid-air RKO.
Reigns rolled into the ring and went after Orton as The Viper started to bleed again, but Kane wasn’t far behind and dropped Reigns with a chokeslam before holding the ladder in place as Orton began to climb.
John Cena was the next man to make it back to the ring, where he struck Kane down with an Attitude Adjustment. Cena then dragged Orton off of the ladder and gave him an AA, only this time on top of Kane to take both The Authority’s hand-picked participants out of the contest.
With no one else there to stop him, Cena climbed the ladder and unhooked the title belts to become WWE World Heavyweight Champion for the first time, his 15th overall world title win.
Although Triple H’s “Plan B” didn’t pan out with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on the line, The Authority’s golden boy Seth Rollins came through earlier in the evening to win the Money in the Bank briefcase.
Fans could be forgiven for thinking the Money in the Bank Ladder Match was only contested between Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins as both men dominated the contest with furious back-and-forth, tooth-and-nail action.
After being temporarily taken to the locker-room to fix an injured shoulder, Ambrose returned to the match with a vengeance and battered Rollins with a steel chair, leaving him crumpled on the mat.
Fire shot from all four turnbuckles to signify Kane’s entrance as Ambrose attempted to climb the ladder, and The Demon hit the ring to drop Ambrose with a chokeslam.
Kane then picked Ambrose back up for a Tombstone.
With the Hound of Justice put down, Kane dragged Seth Rollins to his feet and pushed him up the ladder, holding it steady as Rollins unhinged the coveted briefcase to take down a contract for a WWE World Heavyweight Championship match at any time of his choosing over the next calendar year.
