Rey Mysterio will wrestle his first match outside of WWE in more than 12 years at AAA Rey de Reyes in Guadalajara, Mexico, today.

Mysterio, now going by Rey Mysterio Jr, teams up with Myzteziz (the first Sin Cara) to take on El Hijo del Perro Aguayo and Pentagon Jr.

“I’m more than ready to face off against the future of AAA PENTAGON Jr. & one of Mexicos Legends Son of PERRO AGUAYO!,” Mysterio posted on Instagram. “I couldn’t ask for a better tag team partner MYZTEZIZ! #WeGonnaKickSumAss”

Mysterio began his pro-wrestling career with AAA in 1992 and stayed with the promotion until 1995, before departing for the United States where he wrestled for ECW, WCW, and ultimately WWE from 2002-2014.

The AAA Rey de Reyes main event will be Mysterio’s first match in close to a year.

Mysterio’s WWE contract expired on February 26, but the former World Heavyweight Champion had not been on WWE television since the Raw following WrestleMania XXX on April 7, where he lost to Bad News Barrett.

Another high-profile former WWE Superstar, Alberto El Patron (Alberto Del Rio), is scheduled to be in action at Rey de Reyes, taking on PWG regular Brian Cage.

Rey de Reyes, translated to English as “King of Kings”, is an annual tournament held by AAA similar in importance to WWE’s King of the Ring. Previous winners include Jeff Jarrett and Vampiro.

This year, Aero Star, El Mesias, El Texano Jr, and Psycho Clown face off in a four-way elimination match to determine the tournament winner.

AAA Rey de Reyes airs live from Guadalajara, Mexico, from 1pm today on iPPV. The event costs $15 USD (approximately $20.44 NZD). Replays are available on-demand for seven days following the live broadcast. Register an account at http://internetvluchalibreaaa.com to order.
