NZPWI Roundtable: WWE Backlash

WWE Championship:
Randy Orton (c) vs. Jinder Mahal

Grady:
As much as I want to see the internet implode if Jinder Mahal wins, I gotta go with my head here and take the veteran, Orton.
Winner: Randy Orton

Mister J:
As much as I want to say “You don’t hinder Jinder”, I’m just really not sure I… oh what the hell, I’m saying Jinder Mahal. And I hope he wins with a dive of some sort.
Winner: Jinder Mahal

Richard:
I see Randy retaining. I think this is a bit too much, too soon for Jinder. I’m not sure he’s at Randy’s level just yet.
Winner: Randy Orton

David:
Is Randy Orton taking Jinder Mahal seriously as a challenger? It’s my assumption that he is not, and that makes me think Mahal’s just the man to upset Orton here.
Winner: Jinder Mahal

United States Championship:
Kevin Owens (c) vs. AJ Styles

Grady:
Kevin Owens only just got his United States Championship back, I don’t see him letting AJ Styles take it off him any time soon. He’ll do anything to make sure he walks out with the gold – even if he doesn’t win the match.
Winner: Kevin Owens

Mister J:
I’m gonna go with Kevin Owens. Nobody puts KO in the corner. Not Jericho, not Cena, not Rollins, and certainly not AJ Styles.
Winner: Kevin Owens

Richard:
AJ is getting a ticket to the Kevin Owens show.
Winner: Kevin Owens

David:
It makes me uneasy betting against AJ Styles, but Kevin Owens is a desperate, dangerous man.
Winner: Kevin Owens

Dolph Ziggler vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

Grady:
Hot young upstart debuting from NXT, oozing charisma and hyping up his debut at Backlash vs. Dolph Ziggler? I gotta put my money on Nakamura.
Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura

Mister J:
Oh come on now… is this even a question? My only hope is that the violin guy is there for the entrance too.
Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura

Richard:
Nakamaura’s making his SmackDown in-ring debut here, and I’m expecting him to make a big impact. He wins this for sure.
Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura

David:
We saw what Nakamura could do in WWE NXT, and now it’s time for the King of Strong Style to see where he fits on the SmackDown landscape. With nearly two-months to prepare for this match, I doubt he’ll disappoint.
Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura

SmackDown Tag Team Championship:
The Usos (c) vs. Breezango (Fandango & Tyler Breeze)

Grady:
Fingers crossed, Breezango wins.
Winners: Breezango

Mister J:
Surely Breezango are due. Aren’t we sick of The Usos yet?
Winners: Breezango

Richard:
The Usos should beat The Uggos without too much problem.
Winners: The Usos

David:
With Jinder Mahal’s WWE Championship opportunity, and Shinsuke Nakamura’s debut, Backlash has a sense of new beginnings around it, doesn’t it? This could be another chance for change.
Winners: Breezango

Becky Lynch, Charlotte & Naomi vs. Carmella, Natalya & Tamina

Grady:
Carmella seems to have the number of Naomi, and The Welcoming Committee seems to be unified—at least for now—so I think they have the upper-hand in this six women tag.
Winners: Carmella, Natalya & Tamina

Mister J:
Becky Lynch, Charlotte and Naomi are three of the top female wrestlers in the world. Whilst Natalya is certainly at a similar level, the other two don’t even come close. As long as Becky Lynch doesn’t have to operate a can opener at any point, her team gets the win.
Winners: Becky Lynch, Charlotte & Naomi

Richard:
Long live the queen! Charlotte and Becky Lynch in a team together is too much for The Welcoming Committee to manage.
Winners: Becky Lynch, Charlotte & Naomi

David:
Becky Lynch, Charlotte, and Naomi are some of the biggest names in women’s wrestling today. There’s nothing wrong with Carmella, Natalya, and Tamina, but they’re not quite an all-star line-up.
Winners: Becky Lynch, Charlotte & Naomi

Baron Corbin vs. Sami Zayn

Grady:
I hope Corbin demolishes Zayn and leaves him in a crumpled pile of man and moves onto a championship picture.
Winners: Baron Corbin

Mister J:
I don’t like Baron Corbin, and I think he’s the less-interesting monster guy in WWE. I do like Sami Zayn and think he has been vastly underutilized since being brought up to the main roster. So it kills me to say I think Corbin has got this one won.
Winners: Baron Corbin

Richard:
Corbin has been quiet as of late he needs to win this to reassert himself on SmackDown.
Winner: Baron Corbin

David:
I’d love to see Sami Zayn win this one, but The Underdog from the Underground has a habit of stumbling at the last hurdle when it comes to these big matches.
Winner: Baron Corbin

Erick Rowan vs. Luke Harper

Grady:
I am really looking forward to this and hope that Rowan can surprise me here, but I have to go with Harper because he was the number two through The Wyatt Family’s time together.
Winner: Luke Harper

Mister J:
The battle of the beards. Erick Rowan’s has more colour and looks more lustrous, whereas I feel Luke Harper’s is more dense and durable. That’s why it think Harper will win it, superior beard strength.
Winner: Luke Harper

Richard:
I really want to see Harper pull this out of the bag.
Winner: Luke Harper

David:
Erick Rowan has never struck me as someone capable of standing on his own. It seems to me like Rowan’s a little directionless with Bray Wyatt over on WWE Raw, while Luke Harper knows exactly where he’s going.
Winner: Luke Harper
