NZPWI Roundtable: WWE Hell in a Cell

Kevin Owens and Shane McMahon take their intensely personal rivalry straight to Hell in a Cell.

The sadistic structure will also house The New Day and The Usos as they battle once more over the SmackDown Tag Team Championship.

WWE Champion Jinder Mahal – with The Singh Brothers in his corner – faces the charismatic Shinsuke Nakamura.

Natalya defends the SmackDown Women’s Championship against another second-generation WWE Superstar, Charlotte.

“The Phenomenal” AJ Styles faces the biggest test of his United States Championship reign in the form of six-foot-eight Baron Corbin.

WWE Hell in a Cell airs live this Monday, October 9, from 1pm on Sky Arena and WWE Network.

Hell in a Cell:
Kevin Owens vs. Shane McMahon

Grady Hooker:
Shane McMahon hasn’t won a match in ages and is an old man who barely comes out to wrestle twice a year. The only thing Shane has in his favour is a little birdie whistling my way saying Owens may be looking to move back to the red brand in the near future. Maybe this is the catalyst to have him finally make up his mind with a loss? That said, I’ll still pick KO.
Winner: Kevin Owens

Richard Butler:
Kevin Owens will completely destroy Shane O Mac in the Cell. Shane won’t have the power to stick with Owens.
Winner: Kevin Owens

David Dunn:
All Shane McMahon’s most memorable moments seem to be at his expense. Whether it’s Kurt Angle throwing him through a pane of glass at King of the Ring 2001, or him leaping from the top of Hell in a Cell to crash through a table at WrestleMania 32, Shane O Mac’s always coming off second best.
Winner: Kevin Owens

Mister J:
Have you seen how much Shane McMahon gets paid as a wrestler? Seriously, have you seen?! I assume for that sort of money, he must be virtually unbeatable… unless you’re some sort of supernatural “Dead Man”. So, I figure, the smart money is on Shane O Mac. Also, if the Mean Street Posse run-in/climb-in/appear from under the ring, I will lose my mind.
Winner: Shane McMahon

WWE Championship:
Jinder Mahal (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

Grady Hooker:
This meme has gone on long enough. Let’s just end it now.
Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura

Richard Butler:
As much as I hate to say it, I’m not sure Shinsuke can beat Jinder at the moment. He hasn’t been in great form as of late.
Winner: Jinder Mahal

David Dunn:
This is a match that could do with the Hell in a Cell stipulation, to keep the Singh Brothers at bay. Seeing as they’ll be in Jinder Mahal’s corner, he’s got to have an advantage.
Winner: Jinder Mahal

Mister J:
If Lee England Jr is there to play Shinsuke Nakamura in, it will be a win. Since I’m hoping this will happen, that’s how I’m calling it.
Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura

SmackDown Tag Team Championship, Hell in a Cell:
The New Day (c) vs. The Usos

Grady Hooker:
I really want to see how this match goes. These two teams have put on barn-burners previously and it is time to shove ’em in a Cell and let them go at it. My pick of The New Day is purely so we don’t have another quick title transition.
Winners: The New Day

Richard Butler:
I think this match favours The Usos, however I can’t bet against The New Day.
Winners: The New Day

David Dunn:
I don’t know which members of The New Day will defend their titles, but I still have faith they will defend their titles.
Winners: The New Day

Mister J:
I’m going to go with The New Day here. For a long time, The Usos were a fun entrance and little else. They have certainly grown from there, but not to the point that I can back them over one of the most dominant and entertaining teams of the last decade.
Winners: The New Day

SmackDown Women’s Championship:
Natalya (c) vs. Charlotte

Grady Hooker:
Can I pick Carmella as the winner of this match? Why not give the win to Charlotte to pad her already too-high stats of championships held and then, boom, cash-in and we all go home happy with a Charlotte-Carmella feud on the horizon?
Winner: Charlotte

Richard Butler:
Time for the queen to be crowned. I’m backing Charlotte.
Winner: Charlotte

David Dunn:
Natalya feels like a forgotten champion to me, overshadowed by Carmella and her Money in the Bank briefcase. Maybe this will be the match where Natalya steps out from that shadow.
Winner: Natalya

Mister J:
Charlotte will need to win the title back soon, so we can see her and Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania, right? But will she be able to win it at the expense of Natalya? I always preferred Ric Flair to Jim Neidhart, so I’m going to say yes.
Winner: Charlotte

United States Championship:
AJ Styles (c) vs. Baron Corbin

Grady Hooker:
It’s the Lone Wolf’s time, and that means Corbin is going to have to raise gold over his head sooner or later. Now is a great time to pull the trigger. AJ Styles has had a good run, but his time is up—as long as Tye Dillinger keeps his nose out of the match.
Winner: Baron Corbin

Richard Butler:
Coming off a loss on SmackDown, Corbin has something to prove. That puts Styles in a dangerous position. If anyone can overcome that though…
Winner: AJ Styles

David Dunn:
Will Tye Dillinger be a factor here? He’s certainly been trying his best to be. Either way, AJ Styles rarely falters under pressure.
Winner: AJ Styles

Mister J:
I don’t get Corbin, I really don’t. I mean he’s a big guy, which WWE loves, but watching him wrestle is like chewing on tin foil. As such, I’m backing AJ for the win.
Winner: AJ Styles

Randy Orton vs. Rusev

Grady Hooker:
Can we just let Rusev win something? I’m not asking for too much, just a small pay-per-view match with Orton.
Winner: Rusev

Richard Butler:
I wouldn’t be too surprised to see Aiden English at ringside here. That could be the tipping factor in this match.
Winner: Rusev

David Dunn:
It does seem like Rusev should score a big win eventually, right?
Winner: Rusev

Mister J:
Rusev is due. Don’t make Vladimir Putin unhappy, WWE. You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry.
Winner: Rusev

Bobby Roode vs. Dolph Ziggler

Grady Hooker:
Watching Dolph Ziggler get his ass kicked is going to be glorious. Low-light of the match will be when Dolph Ziggler enters to Bobby Roode’s music… it is so obvious.
Winner: Bobby Roode

Richard Butler:
I have to back the Glorious one here.
Winner: Bobby Roode

David Dunn:
Bobby Roode’s coming into this as a former NXT Champion, looking to prove he can hang on the SmackDown roster. Lucky for him, Dolph Ziggler has a reputation for never quite getting the job done.
Winner: Bobby Roode

Mister J:
Booby Roode won’t give in, ’til he’s victorious. He will do what he must. It’s in his lyrics, people… and who are we to doubt honest-to-god lyrics?
Winner: Bobby Roode

Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin vs. The Hype Bros

Grady Hooker:
The Hype Bros looks like there is a whole lot of friction between the two. I’m still not sure about Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin as a team—who look from the outside to be working well as a team. I will have to wait and see, but I’m fairly sure one these teams are walking out seperately and going their own ways afterwards. If I had to hazard a guess, since all signs point to them, I’ll take The Hype Bros breaking up when Gable and Benjamin win.
Winners: Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin

Richard Butler:
WGTT 2.0 – I mean Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin – should take this one. The Hype Bros haven’t been on the same page lately.
Winners: Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin

David Dunn:
I’m sure The Hype Bros could do quite well against another team of a similar style, but they’re going to get eaten alive on the mat by two of SmackDown’s top technical wrestlers.
Winners: Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin

Mister J:
Shelton Benjamin was one-half of the World’s Greatest Tag Team, and I believe 50 per cent of greatness is more than enough to make up for any deficiencies on the part of young Chad Gable. The Hype Bros might be able to get hyped, but it is very unlikely that they will stay hyped on this night.
Winners: Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin
