Two title matches set for NJPW KOPW

New Japan Pro-Wrestling will hold an historic main event at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan (Sumo Hall) one week from today.

IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega will defend his title in a rare triple threat match against both Cody and Kota Ibushi at King of Pro-Wrestling. Kushida and Marty Scurll will wrestle for the vacant IWGP junior heavyweight title in another featured bout.

King of Pro Wrestling airs live on NJPW World from 9pm NZDT next Monday, October 8.

The historic triple threat for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship – just the second in NJPW history – came at the suggestion of Cody. “The American Nightmare”, who defeated Juice Robinson for the IWGP United States Championship at NJPW Fighting Spirit Unleashed, put the challenge to both Omega and Ibushi.

Omega accepted: “A three-way between three friends, three members of the same faction, for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, we may never get this chance again.”

Omega became IWGP Heavyweight Champion at NJPW Dominion in July. He has been overcoming opponents who’ve beaten him in non-title competition throughout 2018 en route to a title defence against G1 Climax winner Hiroshi Tanahashi at Wrestle Kingdom 13. Cody beat Omega at ROH Supercard of Honor in April, while Ibushi defeated his Golden Lovers partner during the G1 Climax in August.

There has been only one prior triple threat for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Brock Lesnar won the title against Kazuyuki Fujita and Masahiro Chono in the Tokyo Dome in 2005.

The junior heavyweight division will have a new kingpin when Kushida and Marty Scurll clash over its vacant title.

The IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship was vacated as a result of an injury to former champion Hiromu Takahashi sustained at G1 Special in USA in July. It’s still not known when Takahashi will return to the ring.

Kushida bested Bushi in the first match of a four-man tournament to crown a new champion. Scurll emerged as the man who will meet Kushida for the title at King of Pro Wrestling with a win over arch-rival Will Ospreay at Fighitng Spirit Unleashed earlier today in California.
