Finn Balor is going to WWE Royal Rumble – but not as he first thought.

Balor won a fatal four-way match on Raw in Memphis, Tennessee, for the right to challenge Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship.

The position of number one contender belonged to Braun Strowman until a confrontation with Mr McMahon at the start of the Raw broadcast. Strowman, in pursuit of Baron Corbin, tore the door from a limousine, not knowing it belonged to McMahon.

The WWE CEO issued Strowman a fine of $100,000. Strowman showed no remorse for his actions and flipped what was left of the limo. As such, McMahon removed him from the Universal Championship match at Royal Rumble, and booked a fatal four-way to determine Lesnar’s new challenger on January 28.

Finn Balor was forced to fight for his spot in the four-way main event, defeating Jinder Mahal earlier in the evening.

Balor’s win let him advance to battle Baron Corbin, Drew McIntyre, and John Cena against the odds.

Despite already wrestling, Balor rallied and got the better of his opponents. With the Universal Championship shot on the line, Balor nailed Cena with a Coup de Grace to emerge as Lesnar’s next challenger.

“Where I come from you’re given an opportunity and you fight to earn respect,” Cena told Balor after the match.

“For what it’s worth, you’ve got one more person who believes in you.”

Balor is the first-ever Universal Champion, having won the title against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam 2016. He sustained an injury during that match and vacated the title 24 hours after winning it. Lesnar won the Universal Championship at WWE Crown Jewel in November. Royal Rumble will be his first title defence.
