NZPWI Roundtable: AEW Double or Nothing 2022 predictions, preview
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Three years after it all began, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) returns to Las Vegas for Double or Nothing 2022.

An estimated 13,000 people will fill T-Mobile Arena, with the rest of the world watching via FITE, to see Hangman Page defend the AEW World Championship against CM Punk.

The AEW Women’s World Championship, World Tag Team Championship, and TBS Championship are also on the line as part of a 12-match pay-per-view card.

Who’s favoured to win big in Las Vegas and head home with the gold? Join the NZPWI Roundtable as we break down the card for AEW Double or Nothing 2022.

* * *

AEW World Championship:
Hangman Page vs. CM Punk

AJ Murtagh (@AJMurtagh):
This is a tough call. Page seems motivated and determined to beat the Best in the World but Punk appears to be in Page’s head. In the past, Hangman has allowed opponents’ mind games and his self-doubt to lead to his downfall. I think that could be the case here.
Winner: CM Punk

David Dunn (@david_dunn):
I’m a big CM Punk fan—one of the biggest, I’d say—but since winning the AEW World Championship, Page has defended the title against wrestlers faster (Dante Martin), stronger (Lance Archer), and more technically proficient (Bryan Danielson) than Punk.
Winner: Hangman Page

Grady Hooker (@GradyHooker):
I have absolutely loved Hangman as the champion for AEW, but you can’t deny CM Punk with a world championship is interesting. I’m torn between my heart that wants Hangman to retain and my head that knows CM Punk is the Best in the World. Hangman might be awesome, but he’s not the best.
Winner: CM Punk

Sammy G (@RealSammyG):
After all Page has been through to get to the title, it would be a shame to see him lose it. Punk is a smart wrestler, so if there’s an opening, Punk will be all over Page and walk out the new AEW World Champion. But will there be any openings?
Winner: Hangman Page

Steve McCleary (@SJMcCleary):
Punk can’t understand why Hangman might take it personally that he’s come to take the prize he fought for two years to get? Nah, it’s mind-games from the Punkster. It’s what’s needed to rattle a stallion like Hangman, and it’s working. All the way to the title.
Winner: CM Punk

AEW Women’s World Championship:
Thunder Rosa (c) vs. Serena Deeb

AJ:
This is another one I’m struggling to call. Both wrestlers seem determined to prove themselves. My money has been on the champion the past few weeks but thinking about the tear Deeb has been on makes me think she could pull off the upset. However…
Winner: Thunder Rosa

David:
Can we talk about how, some 12 years after it disbanded, we’ve got two Straight Edge Society members challenging for world titles at Double or Nothing? Granted, Serena Deeb’s recent comments make it clear she’s not too fond of her past. She mightn’t like what’s in her immediate future either…
Winner: Thunder Rosa

Grady:
It’s way too early into her reign, Rosa will not want to give up the belt. As good as Serena is, she has a steep mountain in front of her.
Winner: Thunder Rosa

Sammy:
Deeb has 17 years of experience under her belt. Not only that, she has trained a number of future women’s champions, as well as holding a number of them herself! This is Deeb’s opportunity to be the woman to beat in AEW.
Winner: Serena Deeb

Steve:
I’m a long-time fan of Deeb, and I approve of how she’s made the world take notice of her again. But Thunder Rosa is too fired up to let the title slip from her just yet.
Winner: Thunder Rosa

AEW World Tag Team Championship:
Jurassic Express (c) vs. Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland vs. Powerhouse Hobbs & Ricky Starks

AJ:
So many moving parts in this match and a lot of backstory too. I think Christian Cage may factor into the outcome here either positively or negatively. Hobbs and Starks seem to have the least momentum heading in. I’m seeing a title change here and I’m seeing Swerve and Lee walking out victorious.
Winners: Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland

David:
I like everyone’s and no one’s chances in this match, such is the nature of a triple threat! That said, there’s a lot going on internally at both Jurassic Express and Team Taz, while Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland can be focused 100 per cent on the task at hand.
Winners: Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland

Grady:
The big thing for this match is Christian Cage. The man is poking his nose in Jungle Boy’s business and claiming he won the titles – this is going to blow up in his face. I think Lee and Strickland are likely to be able to capitalise on this and grab the titles while Jurassic Express are distracted.
Winners: Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland

Sammy:
There are some interesting combinations in this match. In the end, I’m backing the experience and longevity of Jurassic Express – keeping an eye on Christian Cage though!
Winners: Jurassic Express

Steve:
Well, this should be a banger. I can’t help but think we’re going to see new champions with so much chaos.
Winners: Powerhouse Hobbs & Ricky Starks

TBS Championship:
Jade Cargill (c) vs. Anna Jay

AJ:
I’m a big Anna Jay fan and want to see her win, but Jade is too dominant, and the baddies will undoubtedly have her back.
Winner: Jade Cargill

David:
They call her 99 because that’s how many attempts it would take for Anna Jay to dethrone Jade Cargill, right?
Winner: Jade Cargill

Grady:
Anna Jay has been my girl since day one in AEW. I don’t think there’s a big chance she wins here, but I’m going to pick her anyway out of loyalty.
Winner: Anna Jay

Sammy:
Jade Cargill has been dominant, and even has a victory over Anna Jay, but I feel like this could be Anna’s time to step up and take over. Anna will have been reviewing Jade’s matches, as well as her own, and be ready for Cargill in the next encounter!
Winner: Anna Jay

Steve:
You can’t knock Cargill off her game this quickly. If Jay tried a month of mind-games like Punk has with Hangman, then maybe. But the rookie champion is only getting better each time, so if it’s a traditional one-on-one…
Winner: Jade Cargill
