A fee is payable for the recount. Don't know if it recoups the costs of the count, but the requesting candidate needs to cough up about $1,100. Convention is both leading candidates share in the cost. I don't mind it too much, just to minimise any chances of "yeah, but" accusations at the winner for the next three years.

It gets better!

If Labour file an electoral petition to force a full recount via the court, and Bennett loses, then under our electoral law Bennett will be not only be ousted from Waitakere, but also from Parliament as a whole, and National won't be able to replace her via the list.*

Which could all mean National-ACT-UF only hold 60 seats in a 120 seat Parliament, so won't be able to pass legislation without support from some other party - i.e., so no asset sales! But they'd still be government due to the 'vote however you like except on confidence' agreement with Maori party! This could be fun!

*under current law, to prevent by-elections or party defections changing the allocation of list seats, once the final result of the general election has been announced then any changes in who represents an electorate does not change the number of seats extra each party is allocated from the list. (So, John Banks defecting to National would let another ACT MP into parliament, for example.) And, if Bennett loses Waitakere via an electoral petition sometime in the new year, she can't then return as a list MP as National's list allocation is now final.

...interesting.

I'm so pissed the recount swung it back to her. But given how close it is and how many times it's swung, a full recount is probably warranted now.

That'd be great, but it costs between 100-200k to launch an electoral petition (money Labour likely won't have), and the odds will be against them, every electoral petition over the last 40 or so years has fallen in National's favour. (Check out Hunua 1978 or Wairarapa 1987 as examples).

Labour should consult Winston, he'll know whether it's worth it for Labour to pursue it-he's won or backed most of the successful ones in the last few decades. It'd be huge for Winston obviously if Labour did launch one and it was successful.

Paula Bennett made a disparaging comment about Winston's age in parliament. Winston then turned around and said he wasn't offended, and that he'd challenge her to a 100 yard race any day of the week. The house cracked up.

Im not a Winston fan, but hes a definite breath of fresh air in there. Nice to have SOMEONE in the house that calls people on their bullshit - and actually do it well...instead of some flacid comment they half believe.

Does John Key ever actually read what is put in front of him? He seems to say things along the lines of "I haven't actually had a chance to look at the report myself" an awful lot.

I thought it was funny when the media were trying to ask if the backtrack on the class sizes were John Key's fault and Hekia Parata was all "Oh no, it's all me. I'm responsible for this stuff-up". It reminds me of the NBA when a superstar player commits a foul and one of the scrubs puts their hand up claiming the foul.

She's just being a good lackey.

Glad it was abandoned. It was a stupid idea that pretty much went against what the aim was.

Key has really fucked himself with the stance on the retirement age. Shit needs to go up.

Yeah John Key is way too populist to do anything like that, plus he realises that by the time it comes to bite everyone in the arse he will be long gone.

Fantastic time for him to be away from the country. Shit would have been 10x worse if he was here.

I'm pretty sure he did that years ago, some time while working for Meryl Lynch probably.

Seriously though people still buy this pro austerity, zero growth, Let's cut everything, before we touch the tax cuts on high income earners (trickle down does not work, the higher incomes already have enough disposable income they save any extra, invest it offshore. You give it to the poor so they can spend it in the local economy) beat up and bash the proles, so upper middle class can keep their perks, lets sell off our long term money makers for a quick fix bullshit?

Is anyone here going to buy shares in Mighty River and other power companies if they are released? I don't want to open up a platform about asset-sales being bad etc etc but just want to hear peoples thoughts about the benefits of purchasing if they do go through.
