Didn't really know much about his political leanings..I just liked him because of his belief that politics should not interfere with sport prior to the 81 Springbok tour. And for the fact that he allowed the tour to go ahead.

I went to the test at Atheletic Park..it was my first time seeing the All Blacks play live and in the flesh..a great day out even though we lost that game.
