Hrmm... Not worth it, I reckon. Even at 320kbps MP3 rips straight off the album, you're going to get diminishing returns if you spend much over fifty.

I'd think you'd need FLAC and a less dodgy player than an iPod to merit that kinda outlay. Just imho. Like a proper hi-fi unit playing CDs.

I'm actually starting to get some of my fav albums in FLAC and the only reason I went for the ipod is that I've had my other one for nearly 5 years and it's never given me any hassle, well despite being nicked which is why I'm getting a new one also size was important...160GB is the biggest storage I've found for any mp3 player.

But thanks for your wise words James...seems I won't have to spend as much as I thought!!

The diff between the standard headphones and the $75 ones is HUGE. The difference between the $75 and $300 is kinda... not.

And I've got nothing fundamentally against an iPod or anything. It's just not a high-fidelity player. It has very limited graphic equalisation options, clumsy volume levelling etc. For 99% of people - myself included - it's totally good enough. But if you're really heading into the high-end, high-quality audio market, it won't keep up.

Two things to consider with iPods though... the "Classic" models still use hard-drive technology, as I understand it. Being a hard drive, you get a fuckload more storage (160GB and 320GB is it?) for the same kinda price as the solid-state iPods like the Touch/Nano etc. However, they're also more prone to defects due to more moving parts etc. Probably not the hugest concern if you're not a jogger taking it with you, but something to be aware of - it's why they're not so much more expensive than a Nano etc. One other thing to bear in mind - with all Apple shit, buy older models. Every single Apple product that's at the leading edge of a new generation has been pretty shit - I've found it takes them a while to iron the kinks out. So choose a great model from last year, not the newest shit hot model from this year.

buds? pah. Both for comfort and quality I far prefer proper headphones... my Phillips SHL9600's do me fine; not top of the line, not crap, long life and good sound throughout.

But, yeah, the better MP3 device the better. It's one thing I've always found odd about the cult of Apple: the iPod is there with it's nifty design, wizzy interface and cutting-edge tech, but for quality of sound those following behind trump it each and every time.

Hrmm.... See, I'm of two minds. Home system? Cans for sure. Mobility... I dunno, I'd rather take the unobtrusiveness of buds over cans. Less sound spill to others nearby (bus, waiting room etc), more noise cancellation to remove engine noises and chatter, no needing to fuck around with them slipping or anything, ears don't get as sore after a few hours use, and you get a better product for cheaper (since good mid-high earbuds cost $150, which is low-mid cans quality)

It is a matter of taste at the end of the day.

*shrug* I find buds really uncomfortable, and tend to leak more noise than good headphones.

Yeah i'm the same here and i generally find quality is better with headphones over buds. Also it seems weird but i find i need to turn buds up more than headphones.

Did someone say Buds?....

Oh...Wrong kind of buds.

I've got a Panasonic pair that I retailed at $60 but with the Wife's IAG discount I picked them up for just over 20 bucks.

I go through headphones really fast though.

If anyone rushes out to buy 3D televisions, people in the states are advising that you get your eyes checked before you buy them. That, and that they give a lot of people migraines.

New technology without the kinks ironed out. Gotta love it.

If anyone goes out and buys a 3D TV at this stage, they deserve everything they get. Fucking idiots that's what they are.

I heard there are still serveral different formats for 3D TV..so there still isn't an industry standard...pity the fools who get stuck with the "betamax" of TV's!!

And...earphones...I purchased a pair of Ultimate Ears MetroFi 220 Noise Isolating Earphones.

I got a pair of headphones for $15 from the warehouse and they are surprisingly good.

Hey, my Norton Internet Security software is about to expire a year after getting my new laptop, so I need to think about either resubscribing or getting something else.

So, any thoughts about good 'no need to think about it' security software packages? What's good for least cost? What say you others?

Go Avast. Cleaned up a Trojan invasion that was wreaking havoc when the others (Malwarebytes, Symantec, NIS) missed it, and it's a free (yep, free) "all-in-one" package - full scan and firewall protection. Unobtrusive, simple to use... it's been a bit of a dream.

I have a camera with firewire connection, problem is, there is no port in my laptop for this to go into. What do I need to attain to be able to connect this camera to my laptop?

Find one that is similar with a USB connection at the end. Try other cameras.

If not most Mac's have firewire and most newish MoBos.

Take the memory card out and put it in your laptop.

I've got a new Mac, will my previous virus protection/malware protection programs (avast, malwarebytes) still be good enough to protect this?

No one ever targets Mac, you will be fine without anything.

Oh for real? Knew they were reliable, but not that much. Some dude tried selling me some protection software at Dick Smith for nearly $400

My understanding is the best one you can get is the cheapest. It's a digital signal, not analog, so cable quality doesn't affect image quality as long as SOMETHING is getting through to the screen.

Fuck I hate how dumb I am with this shit. I am trying to connect a firewire cable to my IMac (the 500GB HDD version, 21.5" screen etc) but it won't fit into the connection. I know there are two types of connection 400, 800 and I was given a 400 - 800 adapter, but my firewire cable is too small to connect to anything. Any help would be ridiculously appreciated.
