Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and Liverpool Football Club announced that Kenny Dalglish is to leave his post today as Manager after having his contract terminated.

After a careful and deliberative review of the season, the Club came to the decision that a change was appropriate. It is not a decision that was reached lightly or hastily.

The search for a new Manager will begin immediately.

Principal owner John Henry was fulsome in his praise for the outgoing Manager.

"Kenny will always be more than a championship winning manager, more than a championship winning star player. He is in many ways the heart and soul of the club. He personifies everything that is good about Liverpool Football Club. He has always put the Club and its supporters first. Kenny will always be a part of the family at Anfield.

"Our job now is to identify and recruit the right person to take this Club forward and build on the strong foundations put in place during the last 18 months."

Liverpool Chairman Tom Werner said it was a tough decision, but ultimately one that needed to be made.

"Kenny came into the Club as Manager at our request at a time when Liverpool Football Club really needed him. He didn't ask to be Manager; he was asked to assume the role. He did so because he knew the Club needed him. He did more than anyone else to stabilize Liverpool over the past year-and-a-half and to get us once again looking forward. We owe him a great debt of gratitude.

"However, results in the Premier League have been disappointing and we believe to build on the progress that has already been made, we need to make a change.

"We are committed to delivering success for our supporters and our ambition remains resolute to return this great Club to the elite of England and Europe, where it belongs."

Kenny Dalglish's departure brings to an end his second spell at the Club where, as a player, he won numerous honours, including six English league titles and three European Cup trophies. As Manager he won three league titles, two FA Cups and of course this season, the Carling Cup.

Dalglish said he is proud to have served such a great Club.

"It has been an honour and a privilege to have had the chance to come back to Liverpool Football Club as Manager. I greatly appreciate the work that Steve, Kevin, the players and all of the staff put in during my time and feel proud that we delivered the Club's first trophy in six years winning the Carling Cup and came close to a second trophy in the FA Cup Final. Of course I am disappointed with results in the league, but I would not have swapped the Carling Cup win for anything as I know how much it meant to our fans and the Club to be back winning trophies.

"Whilst I am obviously disappointed to be leaving the football club, I can say that the matter has been handled by the owners and all concerned in an honourable, respectful and dignified way and reflects on the quality of the people involved and their continued desire to move the football club forward in the same way as when they arrived here.

"I would like to thank all of the staff at the Club for their effort and loyalty. I said when first approached about coming back as Manager that I would always be of help if I can at any time and that offer remains the same.

"Finally, I want to put on record my heartfelt gratitude to Liverpool's fans, who have always given me and the Club their unwavering support. Without them neither the Club nor I would have achieved anything."

Can't say I'm totally shocked after a dissapointing season. Interesting days ahead as we look for a new manager. King Kenny..he has always been and will always be a fooking legend!!!

I'm actually am shocked as I thought maybe they'd give him at least til the first couple of months of next season and make a couple of signings that they need in certin area's before deciding weather a change was needed or not. As to who they'll bring in I'm not exactly sure as to bring in another manger that's already at a club will cost more than bringing one in who's not in a job. Time will tell but it felt a surprise move more than was coming .

Also intresting England squad annoumced this morning. Terry stays and no Rio which I can understand why though I'd actually been tempted to pick neither as on form both have had poorish season's. Overall it to me looked like a squad picked with Brazil 2014 in mind rather than this year's Euro's.

Anyways thats my 2 cents worth.

Yeah changing the manager isn't going to do shit for Liverpool. Dalglish did his best, Liverpool improved a little under him and I think the best thing to do would have been to leave him there. The players were used to him, the fans loved him and I think another season with him would have shown an increase in performance from Liverpool again. Even if it was only a slightly better performance than this season, it would have been worth it. The problem with Liverpool now seems to be team culture and little star power. They needed Dalglish to stay there to keep them under control and because he would work well with any new signings they make. He almost automatically has the support of everyone and I fear this new manager may not garner that same respect. Going to be an interesting off season. And there you have it, the longest post I'll ever make about SOCCER

Oh for sure..its part of the culture of football now..we want results and we want them NOW..even your beloved Alex ferguson wouldn't have lasted the way things are today, he was given the job as manager in 1986 and didn't win anything until 1990 when they won the FA Cup and they didn't win their first title under him untill 1993. This culture sucks balls but thats way things are now because of all the money involved..it is also why I am becoming disillusioned with the premier league and I find myself watching more and more lower league football. My love for Liverpool will never fade..but my hatered of this money driven premier league grows by the day.

Oh yeah Ferguson would have been fired a few seasons back when they had a bit of a glut run had he not been who he is. Arsne Wegner has been lucky to last this long after the last few seasons.

Although while Liverpool can expect to be what they once were, 8th place is a pretty poor finish but then how different would things have been had they won the FA Cup.

If Hodgson is picking a team with Brazil in mind over the Euros, he is a very patriotic Englishman to put the country over his own career as a poor Euros and he may not even make it to 2013, let along 2014. England are a team who need to really lower their expectations, they haven't won anything since 1966 and yet go into every tournament presuming they will. I'm not sure what their world ranking is, but i know it isn't that high.

Outgunned? City lurk as Van Persie tells Arsenal he's sick of being potless

Champions ready to pay £25m and £250k-a-week-wages for Dutch star - but neighbours United are willing to match that package

Robin van Persie has expressed his frustration to Arsenal and given a clear hint that he is ready to quit.
Van Persie held crunch talks about his future with Gunners manager Arsene Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis on Wednesday - and made it plain that he is fed-up with not winning trophies.
It comes as Manchester City move into pole position in the battle for his services.
The new Premier League champions are desperate to lure Van Persie north and are ready to put together a £25million deal and £250,000-a-week contract.
Wenger faces the fight of his life to try to convince Van Persie to stay.
The Dutch striker wants assurances on whether Arsenal will be able to compete next season, and has major doubts whether they can.
Italian giants Juventus remain keen and have put together a lucrative package which includes a £25m transfer fee and £180,000-a-week contract.
Manchester United are also keen and willing to match City’s package.
It is believed Juve director Beppe Marotta has met with Van Persie’s representatives, but the Italian champions fear he is keen on joining City.
Van Persie has seen his former Gunners team-mates Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri win the title this season after quitting the Emirates for City last summer.
It would be heartbreaking for Arsenal fans to see him follow suit and the club are determined not to give up.
They have put together a three year deal worth £130,000-a-week, and featuring a big signing-on fee, to try to persuade him to stay.
Wenger has tried to sell the vision of the club challenging for trophies to Van Persie, with him as captain and the main man - and the chance to become a legend.
Arsenal have already signed Lukas Podolski for £9.7m from Cologne and others are likely to follow .
However, Van Persie is desperate for stellar signings to help them win trophies, having voiced similar concerns to Wenger last summer.
Arsenal were staying tight-lipped on Wednesday night but they are prepared to hold the player to the final year of his contract.
It is unlikely anything will now be agreed before the Euros next month, and the stand-off will only give encouragement to City and Juventus.

And it starts!!

United shouldn't bother trying to keep up with City on things like this, let them blow through shit loads of money. Ferguson is smart and can get good young players at a much cheaper price and a few high priced players but they are never going to be able to out bid City.

Just wait City will be like Chelsea have a couple of 'big' years but not win Champions League, owner will get bored and while they will continue to spend large (but not at the same level), their impact just won't be the same.

You know what, if RVP is carrying on like this behind the scenes then he can just fuck off. Get at least 35-40m for him.

The club will still be a force with or without him. I've fucking had it with players holding the clubs to ransom. Na$ri running his mouth the other day is the cause of my angst at the moment.

Yeah the money involved in the sport just baffles me, they DO NOT need those amounts of money in the first place let alone complaining about not getting enough and trying to force even more out of their clubs. However that's never going to chance and I'd love it if Liverpool could throw some ridiculous sum like that at a Van Persie caliber player :P

Wow...what a game for Chelski..so happy for them. All in all these last two weekends have been fucking awesome..first the drama of the Man City win and now West Ham returning to the premier league where they belong and Chelski finally winning the elusive European Cup.
And yes a big LOL@the Yids.

I cannae remember what I predicted at the start of the season, and I cannae be fucked searching, but I'm pretty sure I had Man United down to win nothing..and I was right..they won FOOKIN' NOWT..that is really the cherry on the top of the season for me.

Just saw the penalty shoot-out, must've been tense for a Chelsea fan.

I love penalty shootouts, so dramatic.

"but its too much of a lottery!!"

F that, soccer's pretty damn boring (to me) so something like a penalty shoot-out is always welcome.

Ultimate test of psychology I reckon. If you hit the post (like the last Bayern Munich kicker did) or go over or too wide, it's because you're fucked psychologically.

I still think it's a crappy way to decide a major tournament, but I guess it's pointless complaining about it, it's never going to change.

It's better than the old European system when they used to decide the game with a toss of a coin!!

Most soccer games are decided by a singular strike anyway, so I don't think deciding games like this is all that different. It's about the equivalent of golden point in league I reckon.
