I thought about a more specific topic name but since I'm always battling with technology in some way I thought why not have the same topic that I can always return to. Anyway, I'll start with what should be an easy one I hope. Sometimes when I try to add song files to my itunes library nothing happens, it just doesn't recognise the file it seems. I have googled the problem and a few sites said something about changing the file tags to .mp3 but for some reason I was too retarded to figure out how to do that. So anyone got the solution (in layman's terms)?

Go to the specific song file on your computer, right click on it (assuming you're not using a Mac, otherwise I laugh at you), choose "Rename" from the pop-up list and add ".mp3" to the end of the existing name.

Whether or not this will actually get iTunes to recognise the files is something you'll just have to find out :)

You ever tried it? Because i did and it didn't seem to work and when i looked around it would seem you need a connection that converts av cables into a usb port and the correct drivers.

Two options. Either get it replaced (we do that all the time) or a cooling pad COULD do a sufficient job. There is a third option of course. Have an "accident" with it if you have contents insurance. You didn't hear that from me.

...I'd never considered that. I guess I could. Would most contents insurance policys cover spilling a drink over a laptop?

I should really check my policy, but if it is covered, that means I could chill a little bit around my toshiba...

Oh goody! My kind of expertise. Let's start shall we?

First off, renaming files is open but do bear in mind to save a copy of that song in a external hard-drive first before doing any such modifications.

Okay so with your song files, when you put it into iTunes for the first time, iTunes converts any song that is put into it into their own file (.m4a or .m4p) if this doesn't work and you don't want to fuck up the quality, download a file converter and change it there. If not follow what BNB said and you'll be sweet.

Fuck, I did this years ago and suceed. Even turned the Eyetoy cam into a security cam for my room! If I remember correctly, the Eyetoy needs a specific driver that can successfully be used as a webcam. The following two sites, gets into more detail on it and one has links to download the drivers needed,

http://www.iplayplaystation.com/eyetoy-as-webcam/

http://www.ehow.com/how_4791396_install ... vista.html (Use this one, if you got Vista)

I'll skip DD's question since that got answered... but I'll reply to this...

I usually get mine replaced as a cooling pad is advised to be used temporarily and with a fully functional laptop...

However the third option is the greatest, my Dad used to do this all the time and we would get a better laptop as a result. You could give it to a friend or a mate to look after for a few weeks while you claim that it's stolen (Remember to have photo's taken prior for proof) Give them receipt and other info and presto, two laptops!

External hard drives: any recommendations regarding brand, USB powered vs. wall powered etc? I'm looking at buying one but there's more variation than I had first realised.

If you're running McAfee, you deserve everything you get. You can't trust something that Telecom give away for free

I used to be a huge Seagate fan, but since the SD15 fiasco, I've been using Western Digital's.
Get a 2.5" (USB powered) if you want portability and are willing to pay more per gigabyte, or 3.5" (Mains powered) if you want the most storage for your buck and are willing to sacrifice a bit of portability. The cheaper ones tend not to come with any kind of backup software if that is a concern for you, however I recommend not using the bundled software anyway ( I use Acronis True-Image).

So all of a sudden my torrents have stopped working. Not sure why, I checked and it says the port isn't open any more so I assume that's it. I wanna log in to my router to open it back up, except I've forgotten the fucking password. I've tried all my usual options and can't for the life of me think what it could be. I reset the router and tried 'admin' as a password but that doesn't work.

It's a Siemens Gigaset s763 if that helps. Anyone wanna help me out?

Press and hold the reset button under the unit for at least five seconds. This will cause a factory reset. Make sure you know your broadband user name and password before you do this as you will need to re-enter them.

The default admin password is admin.

In terms of standard headphones, the iPod standard ones are close to as good as you get.

The next step up - and it's a huge step in terms of quality - are the noise-cancelling earbud options. I recommend Sennheiser - brands like Skull Candy seem to be more about how the buds look, which is a retarded basis for buying headphones I reckon. I've got three or four pairs of their mid-low range buds (retail price about $70 here) and if you really care about music, it's worth every cent. Gives you the sound quality of "cans" without the bulk and inconvenience.

iPods tend to do bass reproduction really well, but the trebles can be a bit weak (ie thump-thump-thump but not crisp). As such I'd recommend you look for words like "precision" instead of words like "bass boost" personally - just to preserve the crisp upper end of cymbal hits etc
