The plugs on my old xbox 360 are components and thusly don't work on an old TV that only has the basic red white yellow set up. So does anyone know of a thingee i can attach or something i can do so i can plug my 360 into an older TV?

It has those cables.

The newer 360 has standard ones but the resolution isn't as good so am sticking with the older cables for my new one. But would like to be able to drag it off to my room and plug it into the TV

I'm needing to change my mobile plan to something a bit more txt-heavy, and my phone is due to be replaced too. But I'm cheap. So... Anyone have any opinions on Telstra's new plan; $29 p/month inc. 500 txts with a Nokia 2730?

http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/residenti ... e-plan.cfm

I'll probably pay the extra $20 p/month for 500mb data. Still be cheaper than my current plan, but with more txts, more data and a new phone.

A good deal, or not?

It says $20 for 200mb??

It depends how many txt etc you want. And if you want that crappy phone they're giving away cause no one else wants it! Doesnt Telecom have 2500 txts for like $12?

If it was me I'd get the Vodafone Smart2 plan. $60 per month for 60 Anytime mins, 600 txts, 3gb (250mb) of data and 1000pxts. Plus $300 off selected mobiles. But hey Im greedy!

And wow NZ has some crap deals compared to Aus!! I pay $79 a month; got a free 16gb iPhone; and get 1gb data, unlimited national calls to Vodafone and 3, unlimited txts and pxts to national and international mobiles, and $500 to spend on international calls. 8)

All good points. And, yeah, NZ's telcos gouge on their pricing.

Looking further I see the vodafone Smart 3 package - which, at $80 a month is still less than I'm paying right now because of my data use and exceeding my 'free' txts each month - also allows me to buy a Nokia E63 for free. And that includes 250mb data (currently 3gb 'until further notice') 600 txts and 120 anytime minutes.

So, that's sorted then...

If you're not doing much calling, go on vodafone prepay. Either get a bestmate for $6 for 1000 mins & 1000 txts, or txt2000 for $10 then get a data addon ($10/100MB...or there's another one).

Not sure if it suits (& I don't work for them anymore) but 2degrees have just launched their pay monthly plan. $39 for 120 xnet mins and 600 xnet texts. Plus their data appears quite reasonable as well. I've been tempted to go back over to Vodafone for their Bestmate offers but tbh the thought of spending $30 on a new SIM puts me right off. Plus with my usage I find $20/month on 2degrees suits me fine. I never seem to run out of credit.

My current computer that I'm typing on is in danger of being smashed to pieces by a me. I've had it for almost five years now, and it's random closing of programs & restarting itself is so frequent I just wanna murder babies.

So, can someone recommend a PC or laptop for around the 600-800 mark (at most $1000), so I can get myself a late Xmas gift? My current use wouldn't be much more than surfing the net and using your basic Office-style programs, I'm not much of a non-console gamer so graphics & all that hullabaloo isn't really important. I suppose I may want to indulge in some music-recording or film editing software at some point though don't ask me for specs and what not 'cos I don't know.

Have looked at the various retail sites, but really don't know where to begin. For the record my current one is some sort of Compaq Presario piece of shit, so don't want to go that route again.

Thanks in advance tech-geeks! Merry New Year!

What size screen would you want? Preference for desktop or laptop?

At this stage I'm leaning more towards laptop.

Was having a look at pricespy & retailer websites there were a number with very similar specs - there seem to be a bunch of laptops either side of the $1000 mark, with 15.6" screen (probably the size I'd go for),
So yeah, not really too keen to spend much over $1000 if I can help it, but will see how the cookie crumbles.

So I'm thinking about getting an iPad, does anyone here have any experience with them, or have any views on why I should or shouldn't buy one. And which one should I get, should I decide to get one...3G or not 3G, that is the question.

iPads annoy me because every time I see (or saw, because it doesn't seem to be on any more) the ad for them they look so amazing and desirable, but then you think about it, and there's no real point to them as far as I can see. I think someone said they'd be better if they were smaller - pocket-sized - and also worked as a phone, so, just get an iPhone?

So I've changed my tune and am thinking of just getting a custom built PC (got a flatmate that can put computers together, did so for one of my other flatmates), instead of a laptop/notebook or retail PC, and increasing my budget to the $1300ish mark.
Just put up a question on computerlounge forum, which has already been replied to, can someone in the know advise if that combination of... stuff is decent?

Has anyone had any good experience with a particular computer-build place? And what sort of minimal setup should I be looking for (for average use - internet, movies, music, not hardcore gaming). As previously stated wouldn't mind getting into music recording/editing, but no idea what sort of specs those programs would use.

God it's annoying being technologically inept.

EDIT : Here is a package the dude from computerlounge put together, total cost $1485 (incl 21.5" monitor, keyboard/mouse & Windows 7). Can anyone with any ounce of computing knowhow let me know if this seems pretty decent? Compared to some of the main retailers it seems to be not too shabby?

EDIT : My techy flatty has scoured pricespy for a similar package for $1150, which he'll put together, so that suits me fine just fine. As long as the damn thing works I'll be ecstatic.

Anybody know of any free ipod transfer software? The kind that will copy everything off my ipod back onto the computer, keeping all the playlists and what not? (like Media Widget, but either actually free or cracked)

I was wondering about that too a few months back, but ITunes can do it.

But that can't save all the details, like playlists and counts and stuff?

I've done that before, years ago, and for some reason now i'm having trouble remembering how to tell the ipod to show all its hidden files. Maybe it's because I can't find the 'advanced search options' so i can ask it to on Windows 7.

I shouldn't play with tech when really tired.
