Has anyone got a Bluray writer and how does it perform for 'backing up' bluray movies?

I have one, but don't use ir for backing up bluray's. It's way too much like hard work for a lazy bastard like me.
The main reason is that there's no simple solution like DVD Shrink out there to compress your 40-50Gb dual layer BD down to the 25Gb necessary for a single layer BD. Dual layer discs are still too expensive.
So I just rip them to my server. Much easier.

Take a look hereto see what the maximum of your laptop is, in general if it's a 32bit OS it will only read 3GB and 64bit will read the full 4GB (this is of course with DDR2) DDR3 is double those figures.

Also you might want to check the Bios settings to see how much has been allocated to graphics, this will also take away from what Windows reads as being available.

Umm yes, 32 Bit OS will run 2GB of DDR2 RAM and 4GB of DDR3 RAM
64 Bit OS will run 4GB of DDR2 RAM and 8GB of DDR3 RAM
You'll also find as long as the systemboard supports it too 64 Bit OS will also support 8GB of DDR2 RAM too.

Trust me I've done enough off them to know. :)

You're a dumbass.

The type of RAM has nothing to do with it. The only real limitation (at least on consumer level stuff) is the number of RAM slots.
If you have a DDR2 motherboard with 4 RAM slots and 4 x 2Gb sticks, then you have 8Gb of RAM. The OS doesn't care what type of RAM it is.

Trust ME I do this for a living. If you do as well, then I'm amazed you have a job.

Title schmitle, I just hate people giving out wrong information that someone might believe.

That and the annoying 4 month time delay Vancouver appears to have.

Was a nice opening shot about the time delay.

But seriously i know how you feel, when i relate it to other topics. I'm no hardware genius, didn't study that at all.

seriously dude? when was the last time you seen a laptop systemboard have 4 removable RAM slots?
Also I think you will find it does

It may show that there is what you have installed in the BIOS and in Windows but the reality of it is, is that it's not using the full amount.

Both my lappies have 4 slots. Not common, but it does happen.
Where does your link say that you can only run 4Gb of DDR2?
Dude.Seriously.Dude.

Frankie wrote:

I'll reiterate for the slow amongst us (taken from your link no less).

Where does it say a 2Gb limit for DDR2?
It doesn't!!! I know right!!! Shocker!!!

The RAM limit is completely independent of the type of RAM used.
If you can actually PROVE otherwise, please do. Otherwise....

Now I reiterate
It may show that there is what you have installed in the BIOS and in Windows but the reality of it is, is that it's not using the full amount.

You will from time to time get it display 3GB usable for DDR2 and DDR3 as I have seen in some Samsung and HP models with this you are lucky as it will reserve the remaining 1GB for Hardware.

If this is the case you can potentially get it too use the full amount but only if you know how to set up the Physical Address Extension correctly which is something the normal user doesn't know how to do.

As for your comment on The only real limitation (at least on consumer level stuff) is the number of RAM slots this is also incorrect, you can have a board with only 2 slot but will support 8GB of DDR2 (2x4GB).whether the the OS will support it is questionable but the point I'm getting across here is it's not the number of slots that limits it it's what the board can handle.

As for your otherwise otherwise

Soooo sick of listening to you be wrong.

The TYPE of RAM is irrelevant. The end. FFS I have a machine here in my workshop right now with 4x 1Gb DDR400 sticks in it.
The limitation is in the architecture of the OS not the type of RAM (which is an artificial limitation put in place by MS BTW).

Yes some motherboard chipsets have an upper RAM limit (and this is usually fairly old gear), but again, nothing to do with the type of RAM.

You are correct on the PAE part (partially) however, once again and I know this is going to blow your mind, it has NOTHING to do with the type of RAM.

How the fuck you can claim to be a technician when all you appear to do is regurgitate (and misinterpret) a few google search results is mind boggling.

Image

Edit: BTW, if you're going to be blatantly wrong in your posts, at least have the common decency to pop in a few awesomepants lolcats for shits and giggles. Makes you seem like less of a douchetard.
^^See above for example.^^

Edit the second:

I think you have proved my point on Windows Limitation

Also I was pointing out the different type of RAM as this is all dependent on the machine in question you douche, anyone with half a brain will know that you can't mix DDR with DDR2 or DDR3, I can't believe that you got so stuck on this little detail. How ever there can be limitations on different types of RAM as they DIMMS only go up to a certain size. Being a "Technician" you would know this.

My whole point was on Limitation caused by Windows.
