And with that, I'm now placed in MeLoCo's "I don't believe it's real" camp.

What started as some basic math errors in a RWC tipping leader board has blossomed into something really special.

As much as I am a fan of Indian food..my old man is a bit old fashioned and Indian isn't really an option. Was thinking of a small local restaurant/Bistro that utilises some of the great local produce. I'm actually a bit disappoint with a lot of the menus I've seen on the internets, not just in Levin but NZ wide. Too many chefs trying to mix local ingredients into some sort of asian/kiwi fusion and the end products just sound awful. I'm a fan of keeping food simple and combining fresh local produce that compliments each other. I would rather see NZ chefs using Polynesian influences in their cooking as it is more relevant than the Asian thing they all seem to do. And if it's not asian fusion then it's bloody Mediterranean/Italian. My wife is bit of a gastronome and is looking forward to trying some great NZ food...but you try and find a decent restaurant serving great NZ produce in a simple manner which highlights the quality of the ingredients.

Edit: If anyone thinks I'm full of shit and knows of some great NZ restaurants..then please tell me about them!!

Looking at or getting suggestions for seafood or game restaurants would get you a good net of restaurants with a broad range of food here, even the seafood restaurants have at least one good steak / lamb / pork / chicken option. Good lamb or venison shouldn't be too non-traditionally served ... you would think.

What about the hotel restaurants in the area?

Sadly ... for my post if not for me ... I've never been to Levin.

Whereabouts in NZ (apart from Levin) will you be? Welly had loads of great restaurants...and Auckland's catching up. I totally recommend Hard Luck Cafe in Auckland if you're around this way.

Napier - do some wine tasting and have lunch/dinner at one of the wineries, there's about a billion to choose from and they're usually pretty good with using local produce. Craggy Range is pretty amazing.
Wellington - Sweet Mother's Kitchen for amazing US Southern Style/Cajun food.

Yep that is the only reason we are going to napier..the wife wants to do the whole wine/cheese tasting thing..Sileni Estate near Hastings is the one she would like to go have a look at as they do the whole wine/cheese tasting and they also press their own olive oil...for me, well...we will be there on a Saturday night so I'm just praying the speedway at Meeane is running that night. bogan/10.

Well he's ruled out Asian fusion, so I think it's safe to say pseudo-Cantonese is out too. ;)

I'm not adverse to the odd chinky now and again.
And with the Asian/Med/Italian fusion thing, it's more the higher end restaurants, i dunno, its just so over done here in Australia and now it seems in NZ aswell. NZ has the biggest Polynesian population in the world so you would think some sort of spin on the whole kiwi/polynesian thing would be the go. Hell I can only find one hangi place online and thats in Auckland somewhere. I know there used to be one in Foxton..if that is still there we'll be popping in so the wife can try it. Yes I know you can get hangi in Rotorua but it's not worth sitting through a Maori cultural show for. If we could go in..bypass the show and just get the hangi then we would be so there.
All I really want to do is give the wife a taste of good kiwi food..paua...whitebait...venison...wild pork..hangi...boil up complete with dough boys and potato bread...but eveywhere you look it's all "drizzled with this" or served with a "puree of that." Kiwi chefs should look to what great food you have in NZ and stop looking to other countries for inspiration.
