NZPWI would like to thank Michael Mathieson for sending in the following report on NZWPW’s Hit the Road event from Hastings.

NZWPW’s first show in Hastings saw 10 captivating matches that kept the small but enthusiastic crowd absorbed all the way through.

The opening match up pitted Rufguts against Shining Nick Silver. After the initial lock up which saw Rufguts show his strength to the Hastings crowd, Shining Nick caught him with a DDT seemingly out of nowhere. Although dazed from this dangerous manoeuvre, Rufguts managed to wrestle the advantage back with various arm locks. Getting frustrated with Nick not willing to tap out, Rufguts brought his knee down repeatedly onto Nicks arm in a barbaric but effective onslaught. Not able to inflict the pain he wanted in the ring, Rufguts took it to the outside, extending Nick’s spine around the steel ring post. Once back in the ring Rufguts almost got caught by another DDT from Shining Nick, but using the same move twice in the match did him no favours, and Rufguts reversed it into a vertebrae rattling spine buster for the win. After the thrill of their first match, the Hastings crowd was then treated to Little Joker vs. Harry Peters.
Beginning with many a lock up and exchanges of many complex holds that even much more experienced wrestlers would fear, Little Joker over-powered Peters and took him to the ground in a side headlock. Again, these evenly matched opponents quickly reversed each others’ attempts at submissions. But once again, it seemed Joker took the advantage, with a move that could only be described as the People’s Headbutt. But it was not to be, as Peters rolled out of the way and soon after hit a move that the Hastings crowd had never seen before, for the three.

The next match - Axl vs. Andy Parthania - started of with Axl getting the early advantage with strikes and knees and even a wristlock from the big brawler. Andy never recovered much from this early onslaught apart from a few brief periods. Axl finished this one off quickly with a Spinebuster.

What followed was a close and hard fought match between Belthazar and Tank. Belthazar showed his strength early on with a ring shaking scoop slam then some stiff clotheslines that would rearrange a normal mans facial features. When these failed to put away Tank, Belthazar resorted to an illegal choke right in front of the referee. Tank fought gallantly to over-come Belthazar’s illegal tactics but ultimately failed when Belthazar hit his finisher for the three.

The following had a lot to live up to as the quality of show up to then had been excellent. Sandstorm and Infinity took to the ring and locked up. Sandstorm grabbed the initial advantage albeit illegally with a raking of Infinity’s eyes across the tope rope. But Sandstorm overestimated the damage he had inflicted on Infinity's eyesight and an Irish Whip was quickly reversed into a sunset flip for a close two. But as Infinity made use of his new found momentum this was quickly shut down by and arm-drag snapped over into a hip toss. Later in the match Sandstorm locked in a viscous looking dragon sleeper and just as the Hastings crowd thought Infinity’s conscious was lost and the match over, he powered out and hit his Oblivion’s Edge which sent Sandstorm’s head snapping back. This was enough for the three count.

Hastings was treated to a women’s match next with Misty pairing off against Matariki. With Matariki was waving to the crowd, Misty sought the early momentum and struck Matariki with a stiff elbow. This was enough to send Matariki to the canvas and Misty then followed up with a leg drop. Once back on her feet Matariki locked up with Misty and chain wrestling followed with Matariki gaining the upper-hand. Seeing the opportunity to show off, her new momentum was instantly lost as Misty sought an opening. Later in the match Matariki locked in a devastating Indian Death Lock grinding Misty’s knees together. With her opponent now weakened, Matariki hit a bulldog, crushing Misty’s face into the canvas. But all it took was one chink in Matariki’s armour and when Matariki missed a clothesline, Misty hoisted her up and slammed her down for the win.

#1 CONTENDERSHIP MATCH
The next match was a Number One Contenders match which saw Silencer Jean Miracle up against Dan Stirling.
Miracle made no friends early on trash-talking the Hastings crowd. But it was obvious Miracle was a much smarter man than his actions would lead you to believe as he quickly shut down Dan Stirling’s Kick Boxing arsenal. Miracle pulled out all the stops including leg drops, leg lariats, chops and European uppercuts to do this. But once Miracle got too cocky Stirling pounced - striking Miracle with a brutal spinning back kick, forcing the wind out of his lungs. As Miracle crashed to the mat, Stirling was already bringing his elbow down across his chest for a close 2 count. Later on with Miracle in the corner, Stirling took a running leap and brought his knee right into Miracles face with devastating results. But as Stirling backed up for another one to finish the match Miracle noticed and ducked in time rolling Stirling up with his feet on the ropes for an illegal, but clever win.

NZWPW CHAMPIONSHIP
Adam Avalanche seemed to have a problem with the Hastings crowd and was quick to hurl abuse, but this left an opening for his challenger, 120 kg D-Hoya. D-Hoya attempted a scoop slam but to now avail. Avalanche was just too heavy. A brawl followed which sent Avalanche to the outside. D-Hoya was quick to capitalise climbing the top rope and hitting a flying clothesline. Once back in the ring, D-Hoya attempted another high flying manoeuvre but this time was reversed and Avalanche hit a side-slam sending Hoya crashing. Avalanche then lifted Hoya into the corner and struck him repeatedly. Avalanche then attempted a Powerbomb which in theory should have been the end, but Hoya somehow managed to Hurricanrana his way out of it sending Avalanche tumbling over. This was not to last as Avalanche quickly got back to his feet and hit a powerslam, then a modified Wave of the Avalanche, and finally a big splash for a 2 count. But Hoya found deep inside the power to fight back, ducking a clothesline and scoop slamming the big man. Following up with a leg drop across the neck, Hoya had the match won when Jean Miracle interfered hitting his patented Screw Driver, and twisting Hoya’s neck into the canvas. Avalanche smelling the blood raised Hoya above his head bring him violently down in a Powerbomb for the three
