Undertaker Puts Edge Away In Christchurch!

080613_tombstoneIt was a packed stadium at the Westpac Arena in Christchurch that welcomed the stars of ECW and SmackDown for their second show in the Garden City.

Fresh from their show in Auckland the previous night, WWE gave Christchurch fans an action-packed show, complete with pyrotechnics.

Having been granted a special dispensation to compete in New Zealand, the Undertaker thrilled New Zealand fans, partnering with Matt Hardy and Batista in a huge 6-man main event.

Kicking off the night's action, Chavo Guerrero took on the big red machine, Kane. Initially dancing out of the monster's reach, Chavo was treated to a chant he should remember from last year, and which seemed to annoy him and Bam Neely enough to distract him from the task at hand.

080613_kaneKane gained control early on, but after some interference from Neely, Chavo managed to get the upper hand, taking down the ECW Champion with some low blows and kicks to the knees.

It wasn't enough though, as Kane eventually managed to pin Chavo after a chokeslam, retaining the ECW Championship.

Newcomer Kofi Kingston defeated Shelton Benjamin up next, after a fast-paced match which saw the two competitors testing each other to the limit.

Though he battled valiantly with the support of the crowd behind him, Jamie Noble was not able to overcome the might of the brutal Vladimir Kozlov, going down to the huge Russian in a squash match.

080613_divasAccompanied by Victoria, Natalya Neidhart took on Michelle McCool, the two divas pulling out all the stops in a high-intensity match. After swapping submission holds, Natayla was eventually forced to tap out, giving McCool the victory.

The WWE Tag Team Championship was on the line next, as The Miz and John Morrison defended their titles against Finlay and Hornswoggle. The match took quite some time to get underway, as Hornswoggle and Finlay encouraged the crowd in tormenting and teasing the champions, neither of whom seemed to get the joke. The more they protested, the more the crowd declared that "you suck," with Finlay grabbing the microphone and encouraging fans at ringside to yell it at the champions.

When the match did get underway, Miz and Morrison used every sneaky and underhanded trick in their arsenal, eventually retaining their championship via very dubious means with the pin on Finlay. The challengers got their own back with the means of a water pistol and a shilleleagh, much to the delight of the crowd.

Shannon Moore and Funaki stood no chance against the Great Khali, even in a handicap match. The giant from India squashed the pair within minutes, pinning Funaki with a single boot.

080613_punkChuck Palumbo, arriving at the ring on one of his famous choppers, took on CM Punk in a brutal match that tested to the limit the abilities of both competitors, Punk winning with his patented GTS.

In the main event of the evening. MVP, Mark Henry and World Heavyweight Champion Edge took on Matt Hardy, Batista, and the Undertaker in a huge 6-man tag team match. Another one slow to get underway due to the cowardly antics of Edge, the bout eventually kicked off with Batista and Edge, with Edge skittering out of the Animal's reach to tag in Mark Henry, who traded blows with Batista.

When Batista tagged in the Undertaker, the roar from the crowd was deafening, as the Phenom unloaded on Henry. Henry managed to thwart Taker's attempt at Old School, before getting the tag to MVP, who backed the Deadman into the corner and proceeded to punish him with a series of punches and kicks.

The Undertaker tagged in Matt Hardy next, and the two old rivals went at it, trading rights until Hardy tagged in Batista, who isolated MVP in the enemy's corner, all three pounding on him until the referee intervened. MVP managed to tag in Edge, who reversed the tactic, grabbing Matt Hardy and dealing out punches and kicks in the corner while Mark Henry and MVP assisted.

MVP was back in next, cinching Hardy into an abdominal stretch. From there the team cut the ring in half, not allowing Hardy to get back to tag in his partners. Eventually he managed a side effect on MVP, allowing him to tag in the Undertaker, who cleaned house with clotheslines and punches, sending MVP and Henry to the floor and applying Old School to Edge.

080613_mainThe tide had turned as Edge was now alone in the ring with three men he had a heated and chequered history with. Defeated, he grabbed the Undertaker's hand and applied it to his own throat, surrendering to the inevitable chokeslam. A Tombstone piledriver followed, whereupon the Undertaker pinned the champ for the win.
