Shane McMahon turned the tables on Randy Orton last week on RAW - the team discuss the role of McMahons in general. There's a possibility Matt Hardy and Edge could team up - what do we think of this, given their alleged "real" history? We also share our enthusiasm for the upcoming Macho Man DVD - if the rumors are true! All this and more in this week's edition of Gimme Five.
1) Do you think Cryme Tyme are deserving of the tag team belts? Kirsty: Ehhh... they're as deserving as any one else in the tag team division, which isn't saying much... Matt: Certainly moreso than recent efforts (Punk/Kingston, Deuce and Domino, The Majors or whatever those blonde twins were called?). I think they are over, their gimmick is working well and are certainly a physical presence in the ring. To be honest, the tag ranks have been lacklustre for some time now with Miz and Morrison the only standouts. Winning the titles lacks the prestige it used to garner, and a few more (good) specialist tags working the belts might do them justice! Dion: I like Cryme Tyme. They've certainly been on the cusp for some time - and at least they're a "genuine tag team". It'd be great to see them with the belts! Simon: Two facts here - one negates the other in some ways. Firstly: Cryme Tyme are way over, and solidly entertaining. Second point: the tag division is dead, and if not, it smells funny... so throwing the belts on anyone seems irrelevant. I would like to see a fun run with them 'stealing' the belts and perhaps running with a gimmick of them continually stealing the belts, or 'stealing' wins to retain. But I doubt it'll matter at all. Dayna: I would like Miz and Morrison with them more, but there's nothing wrong with Cryme Tyme. David: Definitely. So are a lot of tag teams in WWE though, such as Miz & Morrison. Troy: Sure, why not? They're (still) entertaining as a duo and deserve the recognition. 2) Were you pleased to see Shane McMahon back? What McMahon family activity are you expecting for WrestleMania 25?
Kirsty: It was cool to see Shane-O back in a cameo, which is I think the best way to showcase any McMahons. I loved what he did with Randy though; that was intense. Very cool bit of writing. Shane looked nothing like his normally rather benevolent self; he looked mean and vicious and he showed 'em who's boss! It'll be interesting to see if that slap Steph gave Shane a while back will lead to anything. I'm guessing not since they seemed to have patched up their differences in order to ally against the Legacy. I'm guessing we'll see that angle continue into 'Mania. Matt: That was terrible to watch! McMahon's punches looked like they couldn’t knock the skin off a rice pudding and the believability of him taking out Orton in such a manner, and needing the entire roster to stop him from killing a Randy Orton, in his prime, was just silly. But then again when you’re a McMahon I guess you get to book yourself however you want? I hope Shane forgets the wrestling and just jumps off sh**t at WrestleMania! Dion: Definitely pleased to see Shane McMahon back, although I'm a little intrigued as to how this story will play out. How will this shape Orton's Wrestlemania plans? Time will tell. Simon: I think this mad first family of wrestling should walk out and introduce the Hall of Fame inductees on the night of WrestleMania 25. Apart from that they should not be involved. Shane was looking relatively good, he always puts on a decent enough show, and at least he was trying something different - but I wasn't convinced. Dayna: I always like to see Shane McMahon, I think seeing him in NZ last year was the most exciting part of the show for me. I suspect there might be a McMahon vs. Orton feud or a McMahon vs. Jericho feud to look forward to. David: Yeah, if we have one McMahon we may as well have them all. I prefer Shane to any of his relatives, I think. Looks to me like Randy Orton might be fighting an uphill battle with the McMahons to get his title shot at WrestleMania. Troy: If there must be a McMahon on the scene, let it be Shane. He's always good for TV and never seems to elicit anything less than a warm reception. I'll expect him to involve himself in Randy Orton's 'Mania business somehow - if Randy makes it there. 3) Bruce Springsteen has proved himself to be a master of writing songs for cinema; his latest of course is the title song for The Wrestler. So, with that in mind, which wrestler would you like to see Bruce write a new entrance song for? And which existing song by The Boss do you think would be best used for either a PPV event or for a particular wrestler?
Kirsty: BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN IS MY GOD. Ahem. As you were. Since The Boss's music takes on many incarnations (from the melancholy which he seems to favour for movies: "The Streets of Philadelphia", "Dead Man Walking" and "The Wrestler") to the more commercial rock that many are familiar with (Born In The USA), I think you'd have to look at what kind of wrestler is getting a new theme. If Bruce is doing it, I'd be tempted to go with his more well-known, rocking style. I think that given his tenure, history and personality, Shawn Michaels would be a great candidate for a Springsteen theme. As for current songs, I've always thought "The Rising" goes well with Bret Hart, even though he's not active. I don't know why - I hear the song and I think of the path Bret's life has taken. Matt: How bout “The Ballad of the Deadman”… he could start with a borrowed line from “Born In The USA…” "Born down in a deadman’s town!”… then follow up with lines from “Darkness on the Edge of Town, and “Dead Man Walkin’”. Springsteen does wrestling tunes? How bout “I’m On Fire” for Kane? “Blinded By The Light” for Jeff Hardy (post pyro mishap)? "Born to Run" for “Screamin’” Norman Smiley? “Hungry Heart” for Mark Henry? I got a million of them! "Brilliant Disguise" for Charlie Haas. "Dancing in the Dark" for the Boogieman. "Tunnel of Love" for Mae Young… somebody stop me! Dion: Springsteen seems to be known for his emotive ballads in recent years, but I'm sure he could pump out an upbeat anthem that would be made to suit any star. How about Mr. Kennedy? I don't know if he needs to hold on to the current "KENNEDY!!!!" schtick. As for PPV themes - you couldn't go past "Born in the USA" for the Great American Bash, could you? Simon: In a subversion of "Born In The USA." we could have someone like Koslov walk out to it - pointing out how Anti-America it is and how it is his Anthem and not an American anthem. Springsteen's new album, as in - just released a week or so ago - makes me sad. It also makes me want to punch him. But clearly, as the song 'The Wrestler' shows, he can still deliver. So I could imagine him writing a new song for an old hand, but really, as Kirsty sorta said, most of his cinematic work is slow, soft, thoughtful, contemplative. Having said that, "Missing" from The Crossing Guard is a hell of a song, but not really a wrestling-ready theme. If we ever see the Bruce of Darkness On The Edge of Town once again then maybe he could write something for a returning Christian or for Kennedy... Dayna: Honestly, I can only think of two Bruce Springsteen songs being "Born in the USA" and "Streets of Philadelphia", so um, I'll go with "Born in the USA" for Hacksaw Jim Duggan. And I'd like John Cena to have a new theme song by The Boss. David: I am sorry to say (please don't be mad, Kirsty) that I have little to no knowledge of Mr. Springsteen and his musical accomplishments. I would be keen to see/hear Matt Hardy with a new theme to reflect his new attitude though, so may as well give him something by "The Boss"? Troy: I'm sorry - I'm not a Springsteen geek, so I'm copping out on this question in part. Maybe he could jack up a song for Jeff Hardy and his life on the wrong side of the (needle) tracks? 4) What are your thoughts, given their history, on the fact that Matt Hardy and Edge will now be teaming up in some house shows to further the Matt/Jeff story? And what, in your mind, is the worst lapse in storyline continuity? Kirsty: Let bygones be bygones is what I say. It was almost four years ago and clearly both men are professional enough to overcome it - I mean, they've been opponents a few times since then. Which means that, professionally speaking, they must trust each other. As far as storyline continuity goes, I'd say Creative would have a tough job on their hands if it meant that people who'd feuded in the past weren't allowed to ally in the future. Matt: I’d love to see (if he is ever going to be utilised by the E) Christian's return and a TLC at 'Mania with Matt/Edge vs Jeff/Christian just for a little something different. Worst lapse in storyline continuity? Can you say Lita boys and girls! Dion: I think it's great. They're two of the most succesful Tag Team exponents in history, and I think they'll have tremendous chemistry. I'm looking forward to it. As for the worst lapse? Well, certainly the worst in recent history was Vince's limo being blown up. Of course, his hand was forced by "the Benoit murders" which quickly put that on ice. I'm sure there are a gazillion examples in WCW we could harp on about! Simon: It's a few years ago now and so it's all under the bridge in a professional sense. I do like that idea of a subverted TLC-type match with Christian teaming with Jeff to take on Matt and Edge. I'm sure Edge and Matt are just together to further the Matt/Jeff storyline, but there are obvious possibilities of them continuing to tag and leading to an inevitable split. But what, if anything, I'd like to see from this is Matt getting frustrated from Edge and doing something nasty to him, turning in to a total psycho and necessitating an Edge face-turn in the process. Dayna: I guess it depends on the level of personal animosity between the two men, but I'm sure that they're professional enough at this point in their careers to put the personal aside and just work through it. I haven't watched the storyline carefully enough to pick up on any lapses in continuity. David: I don't think it matters. They're not best mates or anything, just united against a mutual enemy. As far as I can tell, storyline wise, Matt Hardy and Edge still feel the same way about each other that they did in 2005. The Edge/Hardy storyline caused somewhat of a mess-up when Matt was first rehired, as he set about attacking Edge for stealing his girlfriend. That all makes sense, unless you look at the previous month's rivalries and see that Edge had just played out a similar feud with Kane in Matt's place. If anything, Matt should have returned with a vengeance against Kane for injuring him and then impregnating Lita, or maybe even feuded with Snitsky for killing Lita's unborn baby. Troy: History? With relevance? In pro wrestling? If your names aren't Michaels and Hart, Hogan and Savage or McMahon and Sammartino in this modern age, I don't think it's a problem. In fact, it should be freakin' sweet. Worst lapse in storyline continuity? I think I'll go with Ric Flair in WCW when he went from being insane to WCW president to buried in the desert... I don't even remember in which order these things happened or whether they were related at all. And why were other wrestlers in the loony bin with Flair? 5) There's talk of a 3-disc Macho Man DVD again. What five matches/moments would you expect to see?
Kirsty: Moments: the creation of the Mega Powers, the implosion of the Mega Powers, the Macho/Liz wedding, using the timekeeper's bell on Ricky Steamboat, Liz defending Macho against Queen Sherri Matches: Macho vs. Steamboat at WrestleMania III, The Mega Powers vs. The Twin Towers at The Main Event, Macho vs. Hogan at WrestleMania V, Macho vs. The Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania VII. To name but a few. I hope this DVD goes ahead, it's one of the very few WWE-produced outings I'd pay to see. Matt: Bonesaw McGraw vs. Spiderman!!! Not allowed? Here goes then: 1 – Mach vs. Steamboat, WrestleMania III (Absolute classic match... to steal the thunder from Hogan/Andre for Match of the PPV is testament to the man's talent) 2 – Mach/DiBiase, WrestleMania IV: The Tournament (My favourite PPV of all times... first world title win for Mach and some classic matches along the way). 3 – Mach/Hogan vs. Andre/DiBiase (Summerslam 88… loved the spectacle... the Megapowers unite!) 4 – Mach vs. Hogan: The Megapowers Collide, WrestleMania V (Macho was a master at making you feel the hate! How could he be so jealous of Hogan? Not trust Liz? Reportedly the best angles are the closest to home?) 5 – Mach vs. Liz: Match of the Century, SummerSlam 91 (“Elizabeth… Elizabeth… will you marry me!”... to which she cheesily replies, "Ohhhh, yeah!" The warm fuzzies flowed!). Dion: I REALLY hope this happens, and I hope Savage is involved. - Savage vs. Steamboat (WrestleMania III) - Savage vs. DiBiase (WrestleMania IV) - Savage vs. Hogan (WrestleMania V) - Savage vs. Bret (Random WWE Archive Footage - there has to be some gems in the library from house shows) - Savage vs. Warrior (WrestleMania VII) Simon: I don't have much to add here that hasn't been added already: Steamboat/Savage at WrestleMania III, Warrior/Savage at WrestleMania 7, Hogan and Savage as MegaPowers then when they explode, Savage and Liz's wedding and maybe some of the early footage of Savage teaming with his brother, the pre-Genius pre-Leaping Lanny Poffo. Dayna: - Macho vs. Ricky Steamboat at WrestleMania III (of course) - The Wedding. - Macho vs. Warrior career match - The Mega Powers vs. The Mega Bucks (Summerslam 88) ... that's all I can manage! David: I'm not too clued up on wrestling from the 1980s, I must say, so I don't know what to expect if the DVD goes ahead. Savage winning the WWE Championship at WrestleMania IV should be on there, as well as the Mega Powers colliding at WrestleMania V. On a personal level, I'd love to see some of Savage's stuff with WCW - specifically his match with Kevin Nash at The Great American Bash in 1999. That was the main feud happening when I saw WCW for the first time. A mystery driver rammed a hummer into Kevin Nash's limo on one of the Nitros before the pay-per-view, and then their title match ended in disqualification when Sid Vicious interfered. Classic WCW! Troy: 1: Savage vs. George Steele, WrestleMania II (With new commentary from anyone but Susan St. James - not the mother of Brian) 2: Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat, WrestleMania III 3: WrestleMania IV tournament package 4: Savage-turns-on-Hogan package 5: Savage vs. Hogan, WrestleMania V
