Gimme Five: Chris Jericho, Matt Hardy, Elimination Chambers & More!
Written by NZPWI G5 Panel

Chris Jericho recently found himself in an awkward situation with fans. The team takes a look at the incident and bring you their thoughts on it.

We also discuss how Matt Hardy's doing as a heel, the teased return of Ric Flair, the Elimination Chamber and more.

Glad you could join us for this week's edition of Gimme Five.

1) What are your thoughts on Chris Jericho's fan altercation?

Dion:
Obviously a pretty out-of-control incident and one that was no doubt quite frightening for Jericho. No surprise that he reacted the way he did. I'm sure more details will emerge over the coming weeks, but at this stage, I'm backing Y2J.

Kirsty:
I felt completely for Chris. And I think he had an absolutely normal human reaction. It doesn't matter to me whether that fan was male or female - she was out of line. She spit on him and lunged at him and he shoved her away - as anyone else would have. Security broke down when he should have been able to rely on it most, leaving Chris the one who has every right to complain - not those fans who were totally out of control and this so-called "security" who clearly had no idea how to handle the situation. Under the circumstances I think Chris behaved better than most of us would have, and I'm behind him 100%.

Plus, I hate the psyche of the American culture that, at the slightest incident, screams "I'm traumatised! I'm gonna sue!"

But hey, my husband is convinced it's all a work... and he's not a wrestling fan. Who knows?

Simon:
Chris Jericho is at fault for lunging out, for defending himself. He's in the wrong. That's what the idiots will say. Me? I couldn't care less - but whilst I sympathise with a man at a mini-breaking point and a blatant security FAIL! (epic?) I still think he's a celebrity in a role and people never accept that that role finishes. You get the big bucks, you do the hard yards. But this will likely blow over.

David:
Security dropped the ball, big time. If they were doing their job, as Jericho requested with an expletive or two, there wouldn't have been a situation/altercation to comment on. As far as the aggressors go - if you make the call to get physical with a wrestler you can't really complain about what happens next.

Matt:
Looking at the footage it seems the security guards did a pretty terrible job of controlling the crowd around Jericho’s car, a lapse which allowed the male “fan” to rush Jericho and assault him (Jericho pushed over a security guard, and can be heard yelling “Do your f***ing job!”).

The woman involved also rushed Jericho. I think he was probably genuinely fearful of the mob and responded in a fight or flight way.

The couple involved were lucky that was the extent of it. Jericho has something of a reputation for being a legitimate locker room enforcer (as a once choked-out Goldberg might attest).

Dayna:
Chris Jericho laid the smackdown and rightly so. If some arse shoved me and did what these "fans" did then I'd probably have the same reaction. Can't blame the man at all!

2) How are you liking Matt Hardy as a heel?

Dion:
I'm liking it. I'm not sure if it was absolutely necessary, but it's definitely something different and interesting. It's not the first time he and Jeff have been at odds in the E, but it still seems somewhat fresh. It'll be very interesting to see how things progress.

Kirsty:
So far so good. I'll be interested to see what they do with his music. His theme is so babyface - "Oh yeeeeeeah!" - and lifts everyone up for a big pop, that I don't blame them for using nothing at the moment. But he's going to have a match sooner or later - probably against Helms - and will need entrance music. So I'll be interested to see what they do there.

I think Matt's been coached and he's taken the advice on board; he's no menacing JBL or psychotic Randy Orton - yet. But give him a chance - he could end up finding a new niche.

Simon:
I haven't seen enough to rave about it but I like the idea of the turn, this time around at this point in their careers and status with the E it was a nice turn to make; woulda been easy to see Jeff turning heel so it was a good swerve at the Rumble. Since then Matt has held the persona well but it'll be a challenge. He seem to ooze the fact that he's a nice guy.

David:
He's doing a great job. The best part is that he hasn't even had to change his character that much. He's still essentially the same guy with the same moves only this time he's making an effort to distance himself from Jeff. Matt's always been my favourite Hardy so I'm into anything that lets him stand out and showcase everything he can do.

Matt:
I always found Hardy a little tepid as a face, as he lacks the overly facey “popfest” moveset of his bro. As “Version 1” I think Hardy created his own niche as a smarmy heel, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the latest turn takes him.

Dayna:
I haven't seen much of his heel work as yet, but what I have seen has been good.

3) What are your thoughts on the teased return of Ric Flair? Should he return for WrestleMania 25? Should he make a few appearance to build to something ahead of WrestleMania?

Dion:
It'd be great to see Flair involved at WrestleMania. Although I'd like to think that his retirement match with HBK was his final, I wouldn't be overly disappointed to see him lace up the boots one more time. You have to imagine there will be a huge number of stars from yesteryear at WrestleMania 25, and Flair certainly will be one of them.

Kirsty:
Oy. Well, he was always going to be around wasn't he? As long as he doesn't lace up his boots, I'm all good with it. It's a big 'Mania after all, I'm sure he'll be there in some capacity.

Simon:
Well he'll be there - even if he's just going "wooooo!" from the front row. It's not like he's been hidden from RAW since his retirement, so one or two carefully managed promotional spots and a WrestleMania 25 appearance seem fair enough to me.

David:
This Friday's RAW is going to be huge! Having Flair on the show will never be a bad thing, so I'm all for having him appear on the road to WrestleMania as much as he wants to. Not in the ring though, just because it's not needed. The biggest WrestleMania in history definitely needs Flair to be involved in some form.

Matt:
How quickly the angle changed from “Jericho vs. Rourke” to “Jericho vs. Flair”. Who better than Jericho for Flair to have a one night stand with at 'Mania and undoubtedly steal the show (given that Michaels might struggle to get a decent match from the ever lumbering JBL, should their feud continue?).

Dayna:
I think as long as its in a non-wrestling capacity, I don't mind Ric Flair having a presence in the wrestling world, I'd almost expect it. I think it's a 50/50 call on a built up return at WrestleMania or some pre-booked appearances. At the end of the day I think WWE would get better value from a pre-appearance approach, because whether Ric Flair is there or not, people are going to watch WrestleMania regardless.

4) Plans for WrestleMania 25 allegedly involve a Chris Jericho vs. Mickey Rourke in a boxing ring. There's talk of Flair in the corner. Or Flair vs. Jericho. Another thought is Jericho vs. Steve Austin. Which of these matches would you want to see?

Dion:
I think Jericho and Rourke in a wrestling match - perhaps even a tag match, would be brilliant. Of course, I'd never turn down an Austin match (if his body is up for it), but for the sake of the business, you'd think Rourke in the ring would be huge for the E. And I've got a feeling he'd be able to hold his own.

Kirsty:
As I ranted about a couple of weeks ago, I don't think that Mickey Rourke should get involved with WrestleMania because - rightly or wrongly - it will hurt his Oscar chances and his competition is already very tight. Plus, having seen the film, I really think it would lampoon the Randy "The Ram" character, and I'd hate to see that. Ironically, had he not given such a wonderful performance in such a moving film, I'd have said go for it - he's clearly capable of holding his own in the ring. But for all the previous reasons I mentioned, I sincerely hope it doesn't happen.

And, as I said, I don't want to see Flair lace up his boots again. Jericho vs. Austin would be my pick - that'd be a stunner, no pun intended.

Simon:
I don't want to see Flair in full competition mode but I bet he'd handle it better than Austin. Will Austin wrestle? I'd doubt it. It seems to me that's the buzz every year after Hall of Fame nominations start getting announced. I also don't think Mickey Rourke should go at it for much the same reasons as Kirsty put forward, basically the guy will undo the cred he's justifiably earned from playing an amazing role in a very good film. I'm not sold on any of these matches personally.

David:
I don't like other sporting contests in wrestling, so boxing's out. Jericho vs. Flair could be OK, but nothing will top his match with Michaels so he may as well stay away from active competition this year. That leaves Jericho vs. Austin - the main event of the last pay-per-view of 2001, Vengeance. I think I've expressed my love for all things WWE 2001 in G5 before, so that's my pick for sure.

Matt:
Boxing? Mehhh! All past attempts have been fizzers (Mr T. and Piper, Bart Gunn and Butterbean, Buff Bagwell and his momma). I’d rather see Flair vs. Jericho in a wrestling ring, with Rourke in Flair’s corner (Just one “Ram Jam” Mickey? Please?).

Jericho vs Austin? I heard Austin was wrestling Hogan? Or was it The Rock? I think Austin comeback matches are like Elvis sightings these days?

Dayna:
I'd like to see Jericho vs. someone who can wrestle and isn't retired personally. Wouldn't mind Rourke making an appearance as a valet or something, but I'm not enthusiastic about a boxing match. If I wanted to see boxing I'd go watch boxing... I want some wrestling dammit!

5) It's Elimination Chamber time again for - do you still like the concept? And what do you think of this year's line-up for the extreme cages?

Dion:
I love the Elimination Chamber. I'm not sold on the idea of having two on one event though. The line ups do seem a little watered down to be fair, although it is fantastic to see some younger guys given an opportunity in such a high profile match.

Kirsty:
I like the Chambers, but someone always seems to get hurt - they do seem a pretty brutal environment and I often think these guys have enough to worry about. That said, it adds an element of danger that's always exciting. Like Dion, I'm not sure about two on one show - I think that detracts from both.

The line-ups seem OK. RAW's is way too predictable though, in that Jericho notwithstanding, clearly none of those guys have a shot against Cena.

Simon:
I like the chamber - it's big, it's ominous and it's not Mark Henry! I agree with the idea that more than one match featuring it on the same PPV might not be for the best and this year's RAW card feels obvious. But I'm sure there could be a surprise on the night - and that's what we tune in for.

David:
I like the Elimination Chamber - Survivor Series 2002 is one of my favourite pay-per-views - but not two in one night. It takes away from both of the matches. The guys in the first one can't be as intense in case they smash one of the pods and make it difficult for the second lot, and the guys in the second match don't get the same fan reaction because everyone just saw a Chamber match less than an hour ago.

SmackDown have one of the better line-ups in recent memory for their Elimination Chamber, and it's a toughie to pick too. RAW's Chamber doesn't quite have the same star power, but it's definitely got potential to exceed expectations. I won't be missing No Way Out, that's for sure.

Matt:
I still like the concept because of the amount of possibilities for an unpredictable finish with so much talent/violence available in the one match.

That said, my only concern is that there is a little too much fodder in the World Heavyweight match. Kofi Kingston? Mike Knox? Kane? Even Rey? Aside from Jericho, Cena really has an easy night compared to Edge if he is to retain his title.

I like the contrast in the two styles of matches though… the WWE championship match is full of huge power-based wrestlers which could provide Hardy with the “ultimate underdog win” should the WWE choose, and the World Title match has a lot of smaller, high energy wrestlers likely to literally bounce off the walls given the opportunity.

Dayna:
Yeah, nothing wrong with the Elimination Chamber concept, I just think they need to put some decent people into the matches! Although, the SmackDown lot looks to be a better mix than RAW. What IS Kofi Kingston doing in that match???
