Gimme Five: No Way Out, Christian, Hall of Fame & More!
Written by NZPWI G5 Panel

With No Way Out leaving many fans open-mouthed, the G5 team discuss the event and what it could mean for WrestleMania.

And speaking of WrestleMania 25, we bring you our thoughts on who should be in this year's Hall of Fame, as well as who we'd most like to interview about the history of wrestling's biggest event.

All this and more in this week's edition of Gimme Five.

1). No Way Out is done and dusted. What were your thoughts? Any nice surprises? Favourite match? Least favourite match? MVP of the night?

Kirsty:
I think that anyone who bitches about Triple H getting a mammoth push, saying that it happens only because of his family connections, should take a look at what the E are doing with Edge. If you ask me, No Way Out tipped Edge over the Cena-sized push of 2005 and 2006. And I like Edge, I like him a lot, but despite the enormous opportunity he's been given, he's not quite up there with Cena and Triple H in terms of charisma. I honestly don't see him carrying the strap into WrestleMania, especially a WrestleMania of this size. On the other hand, it might be better for Cena to chase a strap into 'Mania, rather than defend one.

Triple H was always going to main-event WrestleMania, so I wasn't surprised when he won in the Chamber. I was surprised to see Edge lose so fast, and from that point I kept waiting for something to happen with him. Either Vickie was going to show up and change the rules mid-match (as she is wont to do) or he was going into the RAW chamber somehow, which is what happened. But I did not expect him to win it. Objectively, as I said, it could work having Cena chase a strap, but I still don't think Edge is QUITE main event material for a WrestleMania of this size.

The SmackDown chamber match had to be my favourite. Some great work there, especially from Kozlov, Trips and Taker. I really don't have a least favourite... I enjoyed them all, but if I had to choose it'd probably be the ECW Championship; that said, the more I see of Swagger the more I like him. He's very impressive and I think he could go a long way.

Troy:
If I wasn't such a mark for Edge I'd be bitching about what a ludicrous push he's been getting, but since I am I'll let his detractors do it for me. It IS a ludicrous push and it might send him to bed each night with a massive grin on his horse-toothed face, but at what cost?

MVP is easily Triple H, whose performance was a massive middle finger to his detractors, and a pleasant surprise for me since I called him a spent force very, very recently. A deserved win. Looking forward to WrestleMania 25. The 25th anniversary is next year, dumbasses.

Dion:
That was a great pay-per-view. Really enjoyable throughout. Obviously Edge's WHC win is the big talking point. I'm a fan of Edge, and I think a World Title suits him, but I've definitely got an issue with all of this. Both World Championships are playing merry-go-waist and in my opinion, their values have plummeted sharply in the last 12 months - No Way Out saw that trend continue. And as for the booking of Edge to only win the big ones from being opportunistic? It's all getting a bit OTT, now. It's almost like creative are more worried about swerving fans than building credibility. It's a real shame.

David:
Opening with the SmackDown Elimination Chamber surprised me, especially when they put on such a good match - my favourite of the night. Edge shocked everyone, too. He can be the MVP for playing big parts in both the chambers. It was a really solid pay-per-view, nothing to complain about. Finlay/Swagger was the worst, but even that wasn't poorly done.

Dayna:
I haven't seen this as yet, but have been spoiled for the results. The surprise of the night would be Edge switching it up into the RAW Elimination Chamber. All other comments reserved until I've seen the PPV.

Matt:
I’m saving my hard earned PPV cash for WrestleMania, and thus skipped No Way Out. The whole Edge double dipping thing seems a bit of a mish-mash though. Should make the WrestleMania main events a little more interesting I guess? Kudos to Triple H too! Like I said, WrestleMania 25 is a marquee milestone for 'Mania… and who better to carry the title into such an event than he?

Simon:
I decided to not watch this PPV - reading the reports and results it sounded pretty good. Agree with all points about WWE trying to swerve for the sake of swerving but I like the fact that they bookended the show with the Elimination Chambers and they clearly did throw a few fans and critics with some of the booking choices. It sounds like the opening match was awesome.

2). Christian is back. After three years away from WWE (and in TNA) what are your thoughts on him returning? Was it in the way you expected? Will he be a good addition? Is he on the right brand for now? Were you disappointed with anything about his return and are you expecting good things from him?

Kirsty:
Initially I was like - "ECW? WTF?" - but now that I think about it, it's the best place for him. Despite his popularity, he was only ever a mid-carder in the E before, and sending him into RAW or SmackDown to be chewed up and spat out by the likes of Triple H or John Cena would not be a great way for him to return. He can main-event in ECW for a while, hopefully heading the way of the Money In The Bank Ladder match at 'Mania, and could be drafted from there.

I'm expecting good things from him, sure. He's headlined TNA for a while now and done a great job of it, so he brings all that experience to the table. He's a huge fan favourite, but I'd like to see him turned heel because he's one of the very best in that sort of role. Great to see him back.

Troy:
I thought the manner in which Christian returned was pretty flat - I was expecting that dragons would jump out of the PA and a choir of angels would escort him to the ring while strippers danced on poles and handed out milk and cookies to all in attendance. But Christian got precisely the return he should have had - he left WWE as a midcarder with his eye on the main event, and that's how he's returned. In ECW he can get back into the game without being monstered by bigger, brighter stars on RAW and SmackDown.

Dion:
I wonder how Christian feels? I wonder if the TNA locker room is laughing? Christian could walk right in to a program for the World Championship and fans wouldn't blink twice. It had the potential to be one of the biggest comebacks of the last decade, but instead, fell a little flat. It was still fantastic to see him back, and I'm sure he and Swagger will have a great program. But again, it seems to be a case of Creative being more worried about surprising fans.

David:
I didn't expect to see him on ECW, but I don't think I expected to see him at all after he wasn't brought into the Edge/Jeff/Matt feud over on SmackDown. ECW's a good place for Christian. They need someone like him to fill the gap Matt Hardy left and he needs their roster to stand out as a main event player. It's win-win for everyone and will only get better with time.

Dayna:
I love that Christian is back, he was always a favourite of mine. I think it'll be interesting to see him work as a face, because I've mainly seen him as a heel, and a great one at that. I definitely wasn't expecting him to come back on ECW, I don't think anyone was, but I think that it'll be a good jumping-off point for him to gain some momentum, get some wins under his belt and let the new fans know who he is. I thought it was a good solid return and it had the element of surprise which is always a bonus in this day and age.

Matt:
Big waste of pop potential not rolling him out at the Royal Rumble if you ask me. Instead he debuts on ECW? What the..? He will be a good addition once he shakes off his TNA ring rust (he looked a little out of sorts vs. Swagger, and a few spots went awry in the ring) and gets a bit of Body Bulk into him (man he looks skinny now!) but if they let him off the leash with his promos, and appease the “peepulation” with a decent WrestleMania hit-out (Edge/Matt vs. Christian/Jeff TLC please?). Then all will be well in Christian-Town!

Simon:
Again, it feels like a swerve for the sake of a swerve; wouldn't Christian have gotten a better pop at the Royal Rumble and then maybe have RVD return to ECW? But Christian left, as has been pointed out already, a mid-carder and returns as one; that's fair. And he and Swagger should dance well together.

3). You are in charge of this year's Hall of Fame; forget politics, forget issues, forget pleasing the mainstream: name the FIVE people not currently in the Hall of Fame that you would want to see for WrestleMania 25.

Kirsty:
Randy Savage, The Ultimate Warrior, Jake Roberts, Chris Benoit (but only because I could forget politics, issues and pleasing the mainstream, if I had to consider all those I'd go with "Ravishing" Rick Rude) and The Rock.

Troy:
1: Randy Savage. But I have to forget a lot of politics and issues before it seems like a feasible nomination.
2: Chris Benoit. He was an awesome wrestler with inspiring matches and... ...I'm just kidding. May he never enter the Hall of Fame, because what he did was inexcusable, even for the purposes of fantasy booking. The Rock, on the other hand, is a natural choice - and he must be feeling kindof put-out since he's about the only member of his family not to have an HOF plaque to show his neighbours. I guess WWE is holding on to that trump card for another year or so. Or they're waiting until he's an Oscar contender. Might be a while, there.
3: Howard Finkel. WHY isn't he already in there? Forget Jim Ross - to me, the Fink is the voice of professional wrestling.
4: Paul Heyman. The guy deserves his dues, simple.
5: Mick Foley. See "Savage, Randy"

Dion:
Randy Savage, "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, Jake "the Snake" Roberts, "Ravishing" Rick Rude and The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers. Incredible workers, the lot of them.

David:
Howard Finkel, Mick Foley, Randy Savage, Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker. I've gone with a lot of more recent names, I know, but they should all be in there someday; why not induct HBK and Undertaker in their home state?

Dayna:
Ah... the Rock for sure, cos then I'd get to see him live in person which would be awesome, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, I definitely think "Ravishing" Rick Rude needs to be in there. As a kid I hated him, but as an adult I appreciate how good he was. The Ultimate Warrior would be a hilarious inductee if he actually turned up so I'd like to see that... man, a live Warrior promo, that'd be crazy. And Ted DiBiase makes up the five, the man held his own against the likes of Hulk Hogan and Macho Man in a time when babyfaces reigned supreme.

Matt:
I can’t have Benoit can I? Can I? Better not, I guess?

1. “Macho Man” Randy Savage (Deserves it, no matter how many bridges he has burned… dig it!)
2. Jake “The Snake” Roberts (One of the best psychologists in the business ever, damned fine promos too. I was listening to WWE Anthology the other day and his music came on and it still sends shivers down my spine thinking of him and his snake sack making their way to ringside).
3. “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase (He was a master psychologist too… fewer got under my skin better than DiBiase. He never has had his dues for the work he did in both the territories and WWE).
4. Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat (You can’t induct Flair, Savage, Roberts and Co. without giving Steamboat the nod. I still think he was hard done by not being pushed bigtime following his “Match of the Century” with Mach at 'Mania 3!).
5. Bam Bam Bigelow (The best big man in the business never to win a championship? Should get an entry just for carrying Lawrence Taylor’s sorry butt through WrestleMania XI.

Simon:
1. "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase
2. "Macho Man" Randy Savage
3. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat
4. Jake "The Snake" Roberts
5. The Rock

4). Ring Of Honor is moving to TV. With a new announcer. What do you think about this?

Kirsty:
Good on them. Great to see they're growing and moving forward. I read that they were bringing in Ric Flair for a few appearances, which will also help.

Troy:
I... just don't care.

Dion:
It can only be good news for them. It'll be interesting to see if they can begin to make an impact on the mainstream of wrestling fans and make a slow and steady push to topple TNA from #2. I can't imagine that happening, though.

David:
TV show-wise, it's great! They're stepping into the spot ECW had during the 1990s, as an exciting alternative to the big two companies. Announcer wise, I hope the guy that's been replaced isn't the one that says "DANGEROUS!" He's hilarious.

Dayna:
I've never seen ROH and in all honestly don't keep up with them at all, so I have no thoughts about this at all.

Matt:
I dunno how they’ll go. I think the appeal of ROH has always been purely an underground “smarky” thing because a) the spot-heavy wrestling lacked believability b) tape traders get off on it because they can be more smarky because only they have seen more than is accessible on YouTube, c) They provide a lot of guys who aren’t able to crack into WWE/TNA with a pay check, and thus more chance for more smarky types to name-drop to their mates about “the next big thing you haven’t seen yet?”

Now that they might attract mainstream recognition, the smarks won’t like them out of principle (it’s not underground anymore), the general public won’t like them unless the wrestling improves and Vince/Jarrett might… just might… pick apart their roster should they see a glimmer of marketability. Doomed?

Simon:
Good on them for getting the deal but it will be the end of the company's edge. TV immediately waters things down - it has to. As for the new announcer, he comes from a general sports background? Sounds like some network-imposed nitwit. In other words not a good sign.

5). You get to have one interview with someone leading up to WrestleMania 25, all the questions have to relate to the history of WrestleMania and the only catch is you cannot interview Vince McMahon. Who would you interview and why?

Kirsty:
I'd interview the Undertaker. Outside of his character of course, so I'd be talking to Mark Calaway. I'd ask him about his legacy in 'Mania, and if it was planned that way all along or if the whole "streak" business began as a sort of accident - did they one day wake up and say "did you know, 'Taker actually hasn't ever lost at 'Mania? Maybe we can do something with that." He's been around longer than anyone else on the current roster, so I'd be asking him what he thinks of the evolution of WrestleMania over the last two decades, and which ones really stand out for him. His favourite matches - not just his own, but those of his peers - as well as moments he'd rather forget.

Troy:
Shawn Michaels - we come to expect show-stealing performances from HBK at WrestleMania, and he never fails to deliver. What WrestleMania means to him, I'd like to know.

Dion:
Jim Ross. No man has had a better seat at WrestleManias past than JR. I'm sure he'd have some incredible insight.

David:
Howard Finkel. I hear he came up with the name 'WrestleMania', and he's been at every one of them. You can't get more historically significant than that.

Dayna:
I'd like to interview Mark Calaway the man, not in the Undertaker character, because he's gone through a lot of WrestleMania's with the company and I don't think you get a lot of interviews from the "real" man behind the Deadman.

Matt:
“So Mr T? Vince and Hogan would have struggled to get the mainstream attention they got for 'Mania I without your help… you answered the McMahon call again for 'Mania II by doing the job and “boxing” Piper when it must have been killing you inside to not smack him in the chops… and here we are in 2009 and you have to do Snickers and World of Warcraft commercials just to make scratch.

You had to hock your gold to pay for cancer treatment, your best gig in years was sitting in the audience on Conan O’Brien, and Refrigerator Perry and Pete Rose get into the Hall of Fame and you get squat? All I want to know is… Hogan can still wrestle, Piper can still wrestle, Orndorff (despite the rumours of being dead) could possibly prop up a corner post, and Orton senior and Snuka are still available. Twenty five years since you and Vince gave birth to WrestleMania (screw Hogan!) and all I want to know is… if Vince booked the rematch, would you be in?”

Simon:
Linda McMahon. Surely she'd have some stories on how it has all been put together and the stress levels of the household?

And if not her I'd probably look at someone like Edge or Jericho - childhood fans who have had strong showings at a few 'Manias, walked away and come back, taken on legends and are both currently very high profile main-eventers.
