With WrestleMania XXV just a couple of weeks away, we have a very special Gimme Five this week. The panel discusses questions sent in by you, the reader - and it's all WrestleMania, baby! Joining us this week is Stevie, who sent in a question and has been invited to hang out with the G5 panel for this very special edition. We're glad you could join us for the Readers Questions edition of Gimme Five.
1. Who has been your favourite celebrity guest at any WrestleMania, and why? Jen, Dunedin Stevie: Mike Tyson is a close second (“And down goes Michaels!!!”) but the nod goes to Jonathan Taylor Thomas. That kid was living the dream of being surrounded by hot women and men beating each other up. He’s a role model for us all. Now if we can only get David Arquette to show up and win Money in the Bank… Kirsty: I'd have to say Motorhead. I just NEVER get tired of watching them play Trips out live. And Aretha Franklin. 'Cause I got to see her live! And I think her rendition of America The Beautiful got me just as teary as any time I've heard God Defend New Zealand! David: Must be something to do with money, 'cause I'm torn between Donald Trump and Floyd Mayweather. I think I liked Donald Trump better though. He brought huge mainstream attention to 'Mania putting his hair on the line (although everyone knew he wasn't going to lose it) and even had a go at getting physical by tackling Mr. McMahon before taking a Stunner. It may have looked a bit naff, but he had a go, and that's what counts. Simon: The segment with Morton Downey from WrestleMania V probably went over the heads of many - and for that I loved it. I also love the random cameos - like Steve Allen (a total mark for the biz) playing piano backstage with the Bolsheviks. Dion: Bob Uecker as an interviewer at WrestleMania IV holds a special spot for me. The guy was funny as hell, and who can forget seeing him get choked out by Andre! Steve Allen "helping" the Bolsheviks warm up in the toilet at WrestleMania VI was also comedy gold! Matt: I am always a fan of Vince procuring the services of legitimate tough guy celebrities (Floyd "Waste of Money" Mayweather an only exception!) at WrestleMania events because there is always an air of “if the wrestler or celebrity snapped, or took liberties with the other, who would win the legitimate fight?” about proceedings. Of all of these tough guy celebrities (Mr T, William “Refrigerator” Perry, Lawrence Taylor, Shamrock, Tyson, Akebono) I think my favourite would be Butterbean vs. Bart Gun in the “Brawl for All” final at 'Mania 15… because Butterbean did do a number on Gunn! I'd love to see someone have a crack at Mickey Rourke come 'Mania 25? With my luck it would be Mae Young! Troy: MOTORHEAD, Jen, MOTORHEAD. Because THEY ARE MOTORHEAD. 2. If you could take one retired (or deceased) WrestleMania main-eventer and put them in a match with an active WrestleMania main-eventer, who would it be? Jamie Fenton, Westport
Stevie: Mr Perfect vs. everybody. Seriously. Curt Hennig was my favourite star in the 80’s and I loved watching him compete, it didn’t matter against whom. And I know he never main-evented WrestleMania, but every time I look back at every match I’d LOVE to see in general… they’re all both deceased or retired. The Harts. Benoit. Angle is in TNA (which is like being retired). Austin. Hogan. The Rock. It’s a depressing list… and there’s not that many main-eventers left that haven’t fought one of them already. Maybe we could just put "Big Daddy Cool" Diesel in a match with Triple H. See who tears their quad first. Kirsty: I think I'd have to say The Rock vs. Randy Orton. As much as I'm loving the build between Orton and Triple H, I reckon Rocky and Randy would be a helluva feud culminating in a fantastic WrestleMania main event. David: I imagine The Rock might make a clean sweep here, but I think Kirsty's picked the wrong world title challenger. John Cena's career parallels The Rock's more and more each day, so lets see the two get in the ring, one-on-one, and blow the roof off the Astrodome! I don't think anyone would miss Cena if he was taken out of the World Heavyweight Championship match anyway, would they? Simon: I'd go with Koko B. Ware going against John Cena. What? Koko wasn't a main-eventer?! But he's in the Hall Of Fame! Um, okay, seriously now, I'd like to see The Rock take on either Cena or Orton. Dion: Although it wouldn't be your "catch-as-catch-can" classic, can you imagine the atmosphere of a John Cena vs. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin? Two of the biggest stars of WrestleMania colliding - if Austin's body was up for it - would be pretty special. Matt: Does Bret Hart vs. Kurt Angle count? (Angle still being active, just not for WWE?). Has Hogan actually announced his retirement? If not Andre the Giant (in his prime) vs. anyone who has main-evented in the last 10 years (Triple H, Austin, Rock, 'Taker, doesn't matter) would do me for a money match! Troy: Lawrence Taylor vs. John Cena. It'd be the only time I ever cheer for Captain Mandible in a WrestleMania main event. 3. If Doc Brown's time machine existed, what ONE and ONLY ONE WrestleMania would you go back to be in attendance in, and why? Luke, Palmerston North
Stevie: WrestleMania 19. It’s not my favourite (that goes to 17) but there are a few good moments and one that trumps them all for me; Brock misses the Shooting Star Press. My all-time favourite aerial move that I’d been waiting a long time for him to pull out on TV and he almost gets it. He really should have known better. But man, if that didn’t make me leap out of my seat like no other move I’ve seen. Oh, and it would give me a chance to relive the moment where Ric Flair kept ruining Booker’s chance of beating Triple H and JR followed with the line “You’ve got no business up there, dammit!!!” which made me love JR even more. Even in his dwindling years he still brings palpable emotion. Kirsty: WrestleMania VI, without a doubt. The intensity of the build between the Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan was what turned me from a casual fan into a true mark for the biz. And the mid and under-card matches were great too - except the Hart Foundation should have had a longer match! David: WrestleMania X-Seven. It was the first WrestleMania I saw (back in the good old days when TV4 would cut matches and use shots of the crowd during particularly violent parts) and it was incredible. The best part is that I've watched it several times since and I don't think I'm looking back through rose-tinted glasses. Can you get any bigger than The Rock vs. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin?! And then its under-card is one of the strongest I've ever heard of - Jericho/Regal, Angle/Benoit, McMahon/McMahon, TLC etc. Simon: Wrestlemania III. You'll never get more epic. Also, a great card. Dion: Only one? Luke, that's just spiteful! WrestleMania VI. No wait, WrestleMania X-Seven. Hang on.... WrestleMania X-8. No... I'm going to settle with WrestleMania X-Seven. Pro-wrestling was riding high with the WWF just purchasing WCW. Add on top of that TLC and Rock vs. Austin in that electric-charged stadium in Houston and you have one of your greatest 'Manias of all time. Matt: WrestleMania III… because it is and probably will always be the benchmark WrestleMania event. I’d want to have ringside of course… not seat number 90,000 requiring the oxygen masks! Troy: WrestleMania X-Seven was bigger, WrestleMania XIV had the best main event, but WrestleMania XX is the one I wish I'd been to. 4. Looking at the current line up for WrestleMania, which match are you personally looking forward to? Chad, Auckland
Stevie: Hardy vs. Hardy, without a doubt. I’m a big fan of both men and every time they hit one of *those* moments I feel a little bit more like I did as a kid leading up to WrestleMania. It’s what the show is all about to me; it’s my main event. I’ll be heartbroken if they don’t steal the show, because they definitely can and should. Kirsty: I'm pretty stoked with most of the lineup (except Money In The Bank - that's shaping up to be a sad disappointment) but I think I'm really looking forward to Jeff vs. Matt, and definitely can't wait for Orton vs. The Game. 'Taker vs. Michaels will be one for the books, I'm hoping. David: Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels will be a moment in time, for sure. I think Randy Orton vs. Triple H will top it though. The build has been incredible, and it's not finished yet! It reminds me a little of 'Mania X-7, actually. Bad-ass challenger wins the Royal Rumble and makes a line straight for the super-popular champion; things get intense with people's wives being thrown into the equation and it'll eventually tear the house down in Houston! Simon: Both title matches will be great, hopefully - well, the triple-threat not so much but the Cena/HHH one has a nice build. Jeff/Matt could be great and 'Taker/HBK will be the one I think... Dion: HBK vs. Undertaker. Can HBK do the unthinkable? Will we see the best of the Undertaker against Mr. WrestleMania? These two veterans will no doubt have a classic! Matt: 'Taker vs. Michaels will be a match for the ages! Both are such big WrestleMania players, and both make a point of pulling out all the stops at each WrestleMania. Add to that the 'Taker streak, both men's experience, both men's ability to work, tell a story, and draw the crowd in, and it will have all the drama and delivery of last year’s Michaels effort vs. Flair for me. Troy: This is a weird WrestleMania for me - I've never been so uninterested in a WrestleMania undercard as I am this one, but Orton vs. Helmsley is gonna go off like sour milk in the sun. I can't wait to see them tear into each other and from where I stand, it's win-win. Secondly, Michaels vs. Undertaker. We're in for a treat. 5. What one thing, over anything else, will completely make your day watching WrestleMania? An event or moment, for example. Same for what will personally ruin the event? Heck, doesn't even have to be part of the show - could even be who you hope does/doesn't watch the show with you! Stevie, Wellington
Stevie: Good question, thanks Stevie. This is the first year I’ll be watching it live on over five years – and I’ll be heading into town to watch on some big screens. So if the SKY/feed breaks down (*cough*-or-Orton-doesn’t-win*cough*), it’ll be a right buzz kill. But as long as I’m surrounded by good people, all having a good time, then that’s what WrestleMania is about for me. Sharing my hobby with like-minded folk. Should be a good day, no doubt. Kirsty: It's never gonna happen, but the return of The Rock would really make my day. Imagine hearing the music hit and seeing the man come down to the biggest stage of them all. It'd also be cool to catch a glimpse of the Kiwi contingent in attendance! Ruination? Mark Henry winning Money In The Bank. David: The stare downs between Undertaker/Shawn Michaels and Triple H/Randy Orton will pretty much push me to my limit, but I think Orton getting the win after punting Triple H in the head will be the end of me, excitement wise. Mae Young returning to try and become Miss WrestleMania might be pretty bad, but I don't think anything can ruin the event. I mean, it's WrestleMania XXV! Simon: Sloping off work to watch it live. Dion: For me, I always hope for a big comeback at WrestleMania. A REAL comeback, not a one-off spot. Could you imagine if a Steve Austin or a Kurt Angle (yes, yes, contract commitments aside) made a surprise run-in? Can you tell I'm hanging out for an Attitude Era guy to come back into the mix? Matt: I always get a little choked up during the Hall of Fame segment, partly because the guys and gals involved have all given so much to the business and partly because it makes me feel my age when I see the stars I loved so much as a kid all grey and hobbling out to accept their place in history. I really like the look of this years nominees too, and refer back to a Gimme Five question a few months back about who we would like to see nominated, with many of the NZPWI contributors picks making the cut. Hell, guys like The Fink, Steamboat, Austin and The Funks must deserve it if we picked them? Here's hoping to involvement in the event from The Fink, Steamboat, Austin and The Funks as well. I'd nominate Santino to get involved with any of them! Troy: You've planted the seed of thought deep with that one, Stevie. Let's say Triple H loses his title to Orton, then John Cena comes out to "rescue" him and ends up as world champion. I'm glad John Cena isn't that kind of politician because if he was, I'd be shaking my fist 'till it flew off. What'll make the day? Undertaker and Michaels delivering to the best of their capabilities - it'll be a match of the year candidate if they do.
