Gimme Five: Judgment Day, Movies n' Music, Main Event Material & More!

This week in Gimme Five the team takes a look back at WWE's May pay-per-view, Judgment Day. How did it stack up?

We also contemplate the why's and wherefore's of wrestlers in the movie and music business, as well as discussing WWE's upper card - is it getting a tad stale?

Glad you could join us for this week's edition of Gimme Five.

1) Judgment Day is done and dusted. Let's examine: match of the night? Dud of the night? MVP? Overall thoughts on the PPV?

Kirsty:
It was OK. Match of the night has to go to Chris Jericho and Rey Mysterio - talk about some old school lucha wrestling there - really a top performance by both, and reminded me of their clashes over the Cruiserweight title in WCW.

I thought the Miz was hysterical, but I don't think a ppv is the place for that sort of thing. It should have been saved for RAW. That said, he's making the most of his limited time in which to get over as a heel. He's definitely grown into his role, a far cry from the annoying brat he once was, and now really holds his own. Top mike skills.

Randy Orton worked really hard in his match and put a great spin on the cowardice side of his heel status, but I thought Batista looked like he was wrestling under water. What was up with that?

Dud of the night was Cena vs. Show - what a joke. Cena gets the crap kicked out of him for almost 10 minutes then sparks a win at the end. Bollocks.

Most disappointed to see Flair back. I don't mind so much if he's returned in a supporting role but if I have to see those leathery chicken legs in gruts again I shall be very un-amused.

Dayna:
Match of the night: Rey vs. Jericho
Dud of the night: Big Show vs. Cena
MVP: Randy for getting a good match out of Batista
Overall thoughts: Decent enough except the last couple of matches which fell a bit flat for me.

Dion:
I thought Judgment Day was a great event! I loved the Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio match-up - probably match of the night for me. Definitely a surprise to see Cena take the win over The Big Show, though.

Matt:
I had a busy weekend of wrestling and recovery across the ditch last weekend (winning the 2009 IPW King of Queensland tournament thank-you-very-much!) and I was wrestled-out by the PPV, so another no-go for me.

Interesting results in the mid-card though, especially Rey going over Jericho who I really thought they might give a decent push (maybe the IC championship is old hat for Jericho?). Good to see Christian hitting his straps too… hopefully, when the big boys are done squabbling over the championships on RAW and SmackDown, they might throw him a cross-over bone which would be cool. Christian vs. Edge 2009 will be gold!

Simon:
Match of the night: Rey vs. Jericho - no question. And after that it all fell flat. No real interest in the three big matches after Rey/Jericho - but I enjoyed everything up to that. a 50% ppv for me - I guess I'd give MVP to Rey because he's mostly been without a mojo for the past two years - but he was awesome. Jericho too. No Diva action in this PPV - that was a good thing I think.

Troy:
I haven't seen the PPV yet - but I can tell you some great things about the third season of Dexter...

David:
I didn't see Judgment Day (slack, I know) so much like with Backlash, I can't really say. Sounds like it was a bit of a changing of the guard though, with a lot of tomorrow's main eventers taking centre-stage.

2) Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has made a successful transition from wrestling to Hollywood; WWE Films have thrown their weight behind John Cena, but if you could choose any wrestler, alive or dead, to move into feature films, who would it be and why?

Kirsty:
Eddie Guerrero. I'd have loved seeing him in comedy films, kids movies. The voice behind a character in one of the big animated films - I think he'd have been perfect for it. His natural charisma and sense of humour would have carried him far in that sort of genre.

Dayna:
Bobby "the Brain" Heenan - the guy could have been a comedic legend.

Dion:
Definitely Eddie Guerrero. He would've been perfect if WWE Films had ventured into comedy!

Matt:
This is a hard question because most of the guys with real physical presence in the ring I can think of who'd translate to film well have made a feature film of varying success, from Andre (Princess Bride), to Vader (Fist of the Northstar), Bam Bam Bigelow (Major Payne), John Studd (Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man)… there’s no lack of work with Hollywood henchmen for wrestling monsters (even The Ultimate Warrior had a crack in the B-grade Firepower).

How 'bout King Kong Bundy? Oh no, he was in Moving with Richard Pryor. Taker? No, Suburban Commando (tee hee!). Khali? Nathan Jones? Kane? Bugger!

Um, Hornswoggle teaming with Paris Hilton in a home movie entitled Itty Bitty Bang Bang? There you go!

Simon:
I like Roddy Piper's films; I like the bad acting - it works. They Live is a work of genius and it works largely because of Piper's wooden acting. Hell he worked in the ring pretty stiff, why not translate it to the screen.

Troy:
Wayans brothers, out. Shad Gaspard and JTG, in! I think it'd be a better trainwreck than a lot of the stuff out there.

David:
I hadn't thought of Guerrero as an actor before, but it sounds like he would have been amazing. I was thinking Mr. Kennedy, because he's definitely got the charisma, and he seems to be getting injured a whole lot lately. Maybe something less stressful like taking Hollywood by storm would be good for him?

3) A lot of wrestlers have released albums (most terrible) and a lot have - at one point or another - exuded some of the qualities of the "Rock Star"; so who would you have, alive or dead, making the transition to bonafide rock star and why?

Kirsty:
I think I'd keep nudging Chris Jericho down that road. I'm sure he still has plans for himself in that capacity, as well he should, because I think he's got a great rock voice and style, I've liked some of Fozzy's stuff.

Dayna:
I think Jericho might still have a good shot at that, he's not completely awful!

Dion:
No-one. Wrestlers venturing into film is enough. Still, that's a boring answer. How about John Morrison heading a Doors tribute band??

Matt:
For those who haven’t heard the Macho Man rap album – that shit has to be heard to be believed (in the Grammy comedy album of the year category of course!).

If Mach could do some sort of rap/rock crossover – sort of Limp Bizkit with more Bizkit and less Limp – I reckon he’d have the attitude and the showmanship to go far.

Simon:
I think Jericho has a chance still too; not my kind of music but he's not ghastly.

Troy:
Could you imagine Kane fronting an in industrial metal band? I can. And it looks awesome.

David:
It's got to be Chris Jericho. I've heard a fair bit of Fozzy and like pretty much all of it. I don't want to take him away from the wrestling scene by any means, but if someone has to go they may as well be good at their new career, right?

4) These days there's a lot of switching between babyface and heel, with any number of tweeners. What's been your favourite switcheroo, ever?

Kirsty:
Definitely Hulk Hogan's heel turn. Who'd've thunk it?!?! The industry's top babyface, the face of Hulkamania, the eternal good guy, the big, blonde, moustached hero of the 80's - a bad guy?!?! It was testament to Hogan's absolute understanding of audiences and his limitless charisma that not only did he pull it off, but he pulled it off with such aplomb that he was instantly despised. Then he proceeded to behave in a despicable manner - I mean, the guy bowled The Rock with a Mac truck! - proving that "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan was as much of a bastard as "Hulkamania" Hulk Hogan had been a hero.

Dayna:
Easy! Trish Stratus at WrestleMania XX. Didn't see it coming and it was awesome.

Dion:
The first heel-to-face turn I remember was watching Hercules refuse to be sold by Bobby Heenan to Ted DiBiase, and subsequently swinging that 20 foot chain around in defiance. I was jaw-dropped by that! Another from those days that I remember well was Demolition turning heel with the Powers of Pain turning face - which, even as a young mark, made no sense to me! The Powers of Pain were so over and relative newcomers to the WWF.

Another of my favourites was the tease of The Rock turning face. In mid-1998, he was still heel, but the fans were beginning to love him. Just when it looksed like a face turn was on the cards, Rocky buddied up with Vince McMahon to win the WWF Championship at Survivor Series 1998 in the title tournament. They got us good, that time!

Matt:
Bret Hart and Bad News Brown get down to the last three in the Battle Royale to open WrestleMania IV, together they eliminate Junkyard Dog (boo!) and then whammo – Bret cops Bad News’s “Ghetto Blaster” kick and is eliminated (yayy!).

When he returned (yayy!), took out Bad News (yayy!), and smashed his trophy to pieces (crowd pops!) he went from heel to tweener in one act.

And, as much as he acted face, he still wrestled his old heel style and held his old heel attitude quite a bit, so I’d consider him one of the biggest tweeners of all time.

Simon:
Agreed that Trish Stratus at WrestleMania XX was awesome. Also loved that mention earlier of Bret Hart at WrestleMania IV.

Troy:
Triple H's heel turn at WrestleMania XV - no other turn left me feeling as angry or as upset as that one. Runner up: Randy Savage's turn before WrestleMania V.

David:
Kurt Angle's turn at Survivor Series 2001.

To set the scene for everyone, Team WWF vs. Team Alliance is near its end. We're down to The Rock (representing the WWF) vs. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin (representing The Alliance) and out comes Kurt Angle. Angle was on the side of the WWF until a shock defection about a month earlier. As far as 11-year-old me was concerned, this was it, Angle was going to take out The Rock and destroy the WWF once and for all. Instead, Angle grabs the WWF Championship, leaps to the apron and smashes Austin right in the face to re-align with Team WWF as part of an elaborate plan he had come up with with Mr. McMahon! It was an incredible moment, brought tears to my eyes.

5) Randy Orton agreed in a recent interview that the top level of WWE is getting stale; the upper card are in a rotation where they're working with each other over and over again and we're not getting any new matchups. Who would you push to WWE's main event?

Kirsty:
I think Randy is absolutely right. There's only so many times we can watch the Cena-Edge-Batista-HHH-Orton-HBK-Undertaker merry-go-round. I think MVP could be pretty awesome. At first I thought it was a waste of a damn fine heel, turning him face, but he seems to be thriving on it. His mike skills seem to be better suited to babyface promos, and he's certainly delivering them well.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I really like Vladimir Kozlov. Paired with the right kind of manager I think he could be huge.

Dayna:
Get Christian off ECW and onto either SmackDown or RAW and get him mixing it up for the big titles and I'd be happy.

Dion:
There are a number of mid-card guys that I'd love to see make the leap into the main event. CM Punk (like it or not, he's not there yet), Shelton Benjamin, Christian (sure, he's an ECW main eventer, but that's not quite the same!), R-Truth and MVP off the top of my head. I think some of those guys could really hold their own.

Matt:
Kennedy if he put on some beef!

Simon:
Christian and MVP need to step up - and be allowed to. Batista has done his dash well and truly, he needs to step down.

Troy:
I'd like to see CM Punk get a run as an actual, non-pretendy main eventer - but he needs to develop that elusive brand of WWE main-event style wrestling that can hold a fan's attention for more than twenty minutes. (...though the less said about WrestleMania XV's main event, the better. Who's stale, Orton?)

David:
It seems like WWE might finally be looking at updating their upper card based on some of the Draft movements. I'd like to see Shelton Benjamin get given a shot at main eventing - I think he and Orton could have an amazing series, far better than their match at Badd Blood 2004. It'd be nice to see John Morrison step into the main event picture, too. If anyone's got all the skills needed, it's him.
