NXT: McGillicutty Earns Immunity

The second NXT Poll occurs this week, and the second season’s Rookies hoped to seize one last chance to impress the WWE Universe and the Pros.  And with the lowest ranked Rookie in next week’s poll being sent home, immunity from elimination was up for grabs in the obstacle course challenge. And it was the third-generation superstar Michael McGillicutty who proved his physical prowess to win the challenge and the immunity!

NXT opened with MVP hosting his Rookie, Percy Watson, in a MVP Lounge segment.  MVP asked Watson to address his actions the week before, attempting a ham-fisted turn on his Pro which lead to The Nexus beating the Rookies and Pros alike in a battle royal.  Watson acknowledged his mistake, saying his "go-get-‘em" mentality backfired on him. The pair were then interrupted by Matt Striker, who asked MVP while the WWE Universe should vote for his Rookie next week, and while MVP informed the fans that Watson had the best skills in the ring and on the microphone of all the Rookies, his words seemed to lack conviction.

Cody Rhodes was then asked the same question of his Rookie, and though Husky Harris and Rhodes seems to share a similar attitude Rhodes once again couldn't seem to get past his Rookie's physical appearance when compared to his own.  But Rhodes and Harris then had a chance to prove they could work together as they made their way down to the ring to face MVP and Watson in tag team contest.  Rhodes and Harris demonstrated good teamwork to keep Watson isolated from his corner during the early stages of the match, but Watson once again demonstrated his tenacity by withstanding the beating before eventually sending Harris out of the ring via a spectacular standing drop kick.  Watson then followed Harris out of the ring and started to wildly beat down on him, so much so both Rhodes and MVP had to intervene to prevent the match ending in a double-count out.

Back in the ring Rhodes and Harris managed to once again gain the upper hand over Watson, who decided to keep pressing his fragile advantage rather than tagging MVP into the bout.  MVP grew increasingly frustrated as Watson tried time and again to reach him in the corner, but when MVP finally managed to get into the match he seemingly didn't notice that Cody Rhodes had also received the tag and continued to attack Harris despite him no longer being the legal man.  This gave Rhodes the opportunity he needed to strike MVP with the springboard enziguri from the turnbuckle and then Rhodes tagged his Rookie back in.  Harris ran off the ropes to strike with his seated senton, bringing his full 300 lbs of weight down on MVP's chest before hooking his leg to become the first Rookie to pin a Pro on the second season of NXT.

The next match on NXT was a Rookie's only bout between Lucky Cannon and Alex Riley.  This proved to be a very one-sided affair with Cannon never able to get out of the blocks against the determined offense of Riley, and Riley had the bout won within minutes after striking with a TKO.  Afterwards Riley's Pro, The Miz, rubbed injury after the insult by attacking Cannon with his Money in the Bank briefcase before finishing with a Skull Crushing Finale onto the case, leaving the briefcase dented and Cannon lying stunned in the ring.

Finally the Rookies competed in an obstacle course challenge, consisting of a tire-run, a trio of hurdles, then 10 push-ups, a balance beam finally ending with pushing a weighty lighting container up the ramp.  Michael McGillicutty was the first Rookie up for the challenge, and blitzed through the course in a time of 26.7 seconds, a time that no other Rookies was able to beat.  Both Lucky Cannon and Kaval came close, but both were undone by the weight of the box they had to push up the ramp, while others failed the balance beam stage.  Husky Harris once again appeared disinterested in the competition, shoulder-charging his way through the hurdles and making a mockery of the officials attempts at forcing him to do the push-ups properly, while Eli Cottonwood failed on the balance beam and ended up chasing away the officials who attempted to get him to re-start the stage again.  And, at show's end, with no other Rookie beating his time, it was Michael McGillicutty who earned immunity from elimination in next week's NXT poll.

WWE NXT results:

  • Cody Rhodes & Husky Harris def. MVP & Percy Watson
  • Alex Riley def. Lucky Cannon
