With the TNA World Heavyweight Championship slipping away from him, a desperate Bobby Roode forced a disqualification to retain the title at TNA Genesis.
Roode was challenged by Jeff Hardy for the belt in the main event of Monday’s pay-per-view.
As the match got underway, Hardy was the first man taken off his feet when Roode connected with a big shoulder-block. Bobby then set about trying to weaken Jeff’s arm, presumably working towards submitting Hardy in his trademark armbar.
The action soon shifted out of the ring though, and momentum swing back
in Jeff Hardy’s favour as he whipped Bobby Roode to the steel steps.
Hardy then allowed Roode to slump against the guard-rail and positioned
the stairs so as to perform a modified Poetry in Motion, slamming in to
Bobby. Back in the ring Hardy covered Roode for the first near fall of the
match, and then took to the top rope. Bobby was able to cut Jeff off
though, and pummel him in a tree of woe before a suplex and a
second-rope knee-drop gave Roode a two count. Roode trapped Jeff Hardy in a chinlock, wearing him down and ultimately
transitioning to the crossface, which Hardy managed to escape when he
reached the bottom rope. Roode crashed and burned as he attempted a high-flying attack and Jeff
Hardy brought the fight to the champion once more with a flying forearm
and a side-Russian legsweep followed by a pin for a count of two. A big spinebuster from Roode stopped Hardy’s momentum in its tracks, but
only for a moment, as Jeff was able to counter a superplex attempt from
Roode and slam the champ to the canvas. Roode rolled clear of a Swanton Bomb and all the way out of the ring
before deciding to head to the back, seeming to have had enough of Jeff
Hardy. With the title ineligible to change hands on a count-out, Jeff Hardy chased after Bobby Roode and brought him back to the ring. Roode took Hardy over with a fisherman’s suplex but Jeff kicked out at
two and followed up with a Twist of Fate and then Whisper the Wind to
put Roode on the mat. Bobby was able to kick out of Hardy’s cover
though, keeping himself in the match. Roode once again tried to walk out on the match, but was headed off by
Jeff Hardy again. In the ring Bobby looked to roll Jeff Hardy up with
his feet on the ropes, but referee Brian Hebner spotted the champion’s
cheating and refused to count the pin. Hardy caught Roode in a roll-up for a two count. As Bobby kicked out, he
turned his attention from Jeff to the referee, and nailed Hebner with a
kick to the groin. Jeff Hardy swooped in with a Twist of Fate as Hebner writhed in pain,
but before the challenger could make a cover Hebner called for the bell,
disqualifying Roode for his illegal assault, and allowing him to remain
TNA World Heavyweight Champion. Neither Jeff Hardy nor the crowd were pleased with the referee’s
decision. As such, Hardy demonstrated his frustration with a Swanton
Bomb on Roode, before placing the TNA Championship over him.
TNA Genesis Results:
- X-Division Championship, Four-Way Dance:
Austin Aries (c) def. Jesse Sorensen, Kid Kash and Zema Ion Kid Kash was the first man eliminated after a 450 splash from Zema Ion.
Ion was next to go as Jesse Sorensen went in the opposite direction and
eliminated Zema with a small package. Sorensen began to build some
momentum against Aries, but Ion, who had remained at ringside despite
being eliminated, knocked Jesse’s feet out from under him as he climbed
to the top rope. With Sorensen in a vulnerable position, Aries nailed
Jesse with a precise dropkick before finishing him with a second-rope
Brainbuster.
- Devon def. “The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero w/ Terrence & Terrell
“The Pope” appeared to have things going his way until he called on
Devon’s sons, Terrence and Terrell, to get involved with the match. Both
boys refused to attack their father, which led to Dinero ejecting them
from the ring. Having seen enough, Devon fired up and began to mount a
comeback against “The Pope”. When Dinero missed the DDE in the corner,
Devon was ready to capitalise with the Saving Grace for the win, and an
emotional reunion with his sons.
- Gunner w/ Ric Flair def. Rob Van Dam
Hell-bent on injuring Van Dam, Gunner managed to do what he couldn’t on Impact Wrestling when he pulled back the protective padding on the
concrete floor and planted RVD with a DDT. Back in the ring, a
three-count was unavoidable, and Gunner left with his mentor, Ric Flair,
while Van Dam left on a stretcher.
- Knockouts Championship:
Gail Kim (c) def. Mickie James via disqualification Velvet Sky talked Sting into having Madison Rayne locked in a cage and
suspended above the ring to ensure she did not interfere in the match.
“Velvet’s Touch” couldn’t make Madison an impartial bystander for long
though, and soon Rayne attempted to throw some brass knuckles to Gail
Kim. When the referee intercepted the weapon, Rayne tossed another pair
to Kim – only for Mickie James to catch the knuckles this time.
Frustrated with the way the match was going, James clocked Kim in plain
sight of the referee to give the Knockouts Champion the win.
- Monster’s Ball Match:
Abyss def. Bully Ray It took tacks, tables, barbed wire, a cheese-grater and even the return
of Janice, but in the end Abyss emerged victorious from Monster’s Ball
after a Black Hole Slam onto a barbed-wire board.
- TNA Tag Team Championship:
Crimson & Matt Morgan (c) def. Magnus & Samoa Joe Crimson and Morgan were able to overcome the combination of Magnus and
Samoa Joe with a huge double-chokeslam that drilled Magnus and left him
down for the count.
- Kurt Angle def. James Storm
With pride on the line and a heated rivalry behind them, Kurt Angle
proved James Storm may not always have his number with a tainted win
over the Cowboy. With the referee distracted after being dragged into
the path of Storm’s superkick and almost knocked down, Angle hit Storm
with a low blow and followed up with a hard kick to the side of the head
to put Storm away.
- TNA World Heavyweight Championship:
Jeff Hardy def. Bobby Roode (c) via disqualification When it became clear that Roode wasn’t going to be able to keep Jeff
Hardy down, nor make him submit, the reigning champion did the only
thing he could think of to retain his title – low-blow the referee and
take the disqualification loss to keep the TNA World Heavyweight
Championship around his waist.
