SmackDown: Over the Limit draws near

120513_sheamusFollowing on from John Laurinaitis’ announcement on Raw that both Chris Jericho and Randy Orton had been added to the World Heavyweight Championship match at Over the Limit, SmackDown began with a Raw rematch, pitting Orton and Sheamus against Del Rio and Jericho.

The match didn’t last for long though, when all four men began to brawl in the ring, forcing the referee to rule the bout a “no contest”.

Randy Orton went after Alberto Del Rio, clotheslining the Mexican aristocrat over the security barrier and into the crowd. Sheamus, meanwhile, sent Chris Jericho over the top rope and out of the ring with a clothesline of his own while referees flooded the ringside area to try and calm all four men down.

John Laurinaitis’ executive assistant, Eve, announced via Twitter that Jericho and Sheamus would meet again, one-on-one, in the night’s main event, while Alberto Del Rio and Randy Orton would also wrestle each other.

When their singles contest began, Del Rio went straight to work on Randy Orton’s arm, looking to set up his brutal cross armbreaker. Orton could not catch Del Rio with his elevated DDT either, and instead ate an enzuigiri from the original number one contender to the World Heavyweight Championship.

Orton began to battle back against Del Rio though, dropping him with his modified backbreaker and eventually connecting with the elevated DDT.

Orton lined Alberto Del Rio up for the RKO, but had to let Del Rio off the hook when Ricardo Rodriguez took to the top rope and hurtled toward Orton with a cross-body press. Orton snatched Rodriguez out of the air with an RKO though, while the referee disqualified Del Rio for outside interference.

Del Rio didn’t seem to care that he had lost the match though, and blindsided the Viper by ramming him shoulder-first into the ring post before applying the cross armbreaker post-match.

When SmackDown’s main event rolled around, Sheamus and Chris Jericho picked up right where they had left off at the top of the night.

Sheamus tied Jericho up in the ropes and battered him with his clubbing Irish Hand Grenade strikes to the chest, before using the ropes to his advantage again when he delivered a slingshot shoulder block for a two-count.

Sheamus went to the well one too many times though, and was caught with a dropkick from Jericho that sent him spilling from the apron to the outside.

Jericho dragged the Celtic Warrior back to the ring and soon had Sheamus in the Walls of Jericho. The World Heavyweight Champion made it to the safety of the ropes though, and was eventually able to backdrop Jericho to the outside.

Alberto Del Rio hurried to ringside as Jericho got back to his feet and rammed Jericho into the ring steps, causing a disqualification and costing Sheamus the match.

Del Rio’s presence drew Randy Orton to the ring though, where both the Viper and the Celtic Warrior laid Alberto out with an RKO and a Brogue Kick while Chris Jericho watched from the entrance way.

120513_bryanFormer World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan picked up a big, although tainted, win over Big Show in one-on-one action.

Bryan avoided a spear from Big Show early into their match and kicked out the giant’s leg before trying to apply the Yes Lock. Bryan didn’t need to fully secure the hold though, as the bell rang to bring an end of the match before he had a chance to lock his hands.

John Laurinaitis soon walked out from behind the timekeeper’s table, revealing he had called for the bell to cheat Big Show out of a win as payback for Show mocking Laurinaitis’ voice on Raw. Furthermore, Laurinaitis announced that he was expecting another apology from Big Show next week.

Also on SmackDown, Heath Slater became the latest victim of his fellow NXT season one graduate Ryback. Slater put up more fight than any of Ryback’s previous opponents, managing to bring Ryback to one knee with a series of forearm shots across the back, but in the end the One Man Southern Rock Band met the same fate as everyone else to step in the ring with Ryback and was defeated following a modified muscle buster.

Swiss sensation Antonio Cesaro also turned in a dominant performance on SmackDown, making short work of Alex Riley. Riley was caught off guard by Cesaro’s unorthodox moves, such as a gutwrench throw that dropped him right on his tailbone. Antonio then rattled Alex with a European uppercut, and finished him with a pancake cradle piledriver. After the match, Cesaro by sharing a passionate kiss with Aksana – all while Aksana’s former boyfriend and former SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long watched from mere feet away.
