G5: Sacrifice, Paul Heyman, NXT & More

We're nearly halfway through the year and TNA's most recent ppv, Sacrifice, is done and dusted. How did it shape up?

We also look at TNA's main event scene, currently led by Bobby Roode. Who else should be in the top tier?

Paul Heyman returned to RAW last week, to announce that Brock Lesnar had quit. We bring you our thoughts on the return of one of wrestling's best mouthpieces.

All this and more in this week's edition of Gimme Five.

1) TNA Sacrifice is behind us. How did you like the show? Match of the night. Dud of the night? MVP?

Blake:
I didn't get to watch, but I've seen the results. It seems the greatest mind in professional wrestling (not Hornswoggle) was thinking about how things should be done. It seems I gave them undeserved respect. Joe and Magnus losing the Tag Team straps? So much for the future of the tag team division. It seems Samoa Joe will soon be making a more raw impact... And Angle beating Styles? Stupid! I can't think any more about it; I'll implode.

David:
What a great little show! Arguably TNA's best all year, which is quite the achievement considering how little tradition Sacrifice has compared to, say, Lockdown last month. I thought for sure Austin Aries vs. Bully Ray was going to be match of the night, and AJ Styles vs. Kurt Angle came along directly after and just tore the house down again! Money well spent, that one. Dud of the night goes to the TV title match, because approximately no one was interested in that. Except Stevie - I hear he's a big Devon fan. I'll give RVD the MVP award. I cared so little about that match, and then it suddenly became a ladder match, which should have played right into Van Dam's hands, and I became very curious to see how things would go.

Kirsty:
I enjoyed Sacrifice, I thought it was a fast-paced show with a few twists and turns along the way. I was so thrilled to see Austin Aries defeat Bully Ray - that's my Match of the Night. I do worry about the health of Austin Aries now though - Bully Ray will be gunning for him.

Angle vs. Styles was also an awesome match - loved it.

All in all a great effort from TNA.

Dion:
It was a solid event, definitely. I'm really enjoying Austin Aries at the moment, so loved his win over Bully Ray. Angle and Styles had a great match too. As much as venue shouldn't affect things, I'd really like to see TNA get out of the iMPACT! Zone for pay-per-views.

Stevie:
An enjoyable, solid event. Austin Aries is just killing it at the moment, loved his match the best. Those two giant scrapes on his back made the rest of the match so intense, the poor guy. He's definitely the MVP. I skipped past the TV title match, it didn't hold much interest for me. Despite being sent a free Devon shirt from SKY TV that even David Dunn doesn't want to take off my hands - and he owns a duvet with a half-naked Batista on it. I threw it in the garbage and it reappeared on my desk a few minutes later. I'm pretty sure this story ends up with me in a ditch, wearing that shirt with no memory of the previous week, and a warrant out for my arrest. "It wasn't me, officers! It was the shirt, honest! Testify!"

Scott:
Lockdown was unsatisfying for me, and RVD being in the main event didn’t interest me, so I didn’t watch this pay-per-view. However, I hear that there was nary a Hogan or a Bischoff to be seen on the show, so I may’ve made the wrong decision.

2) Bobby Roode is still the TNA World Heavyweight Champion following Sacrifice. Kurt Angle and Mr Anderson are coming off big wins at the show. That in mind, who would you like to see in the main event of Slammiversary, celebrating 10 years of TNA, next month?

Blake:
Abyss? AJ Styles? Samoa Joe? Kurt Angle? Bobby Roode? James Storm? Sting? You know, just people who have built the company to this point on their blood, sweat and tears.

David:
Well, if you'd asked me before Sacrifice I would have said AJ Styles would be pretty much guaranteed to be in the main event, as the man who's pretty much been the face of the company for all 10 of those years. Awfully hard to justify him getting a title shot if he's coming off a loss to Kurt Angle though. I guess this is the time to give James Storm his moment we all thought he'd get at Lockdown and have the Tennessee Cowboy take the title back from Bobby Roode? Alternatively - and this one might be a bit harder to get to, but would be so worth it - you let Daniels taking the tag titles from Samoa Joe cross over with the Daniels/AJ Styles thing, and we get that triple threat again!

Kirsty:
James Storm. It's a shame it wasn't built better though - I'd have kept Storm and Roode at each other right up until Slammiversary. It's a shame to me that they're not giving that feud more legs. But I don't know about taking the strap off Roode - not yet anyway. He's an outstanding heel champion, and he's one of TNA's own homegrown. Speaking of which, they're who I would like to see in TNA's main event scene, and not just at Slammiversary. Daniels, Styles, Aries, Samoa Joe, along with Roode and Storm, are some of the most exciting guys in TNA and have been for years.

Dion:
I like Bobby Roode as Champ, but I'm struggling to find myself excited about the World Heavyweight Championship matches. Maybe a return to some of the original homemade stars like AJ Styles and Samoa Joe being thrown in to the mix would get the juices flowing?

Stevie:
Joseph Park's brother, Chris. You know, Abyss? Actually, they might as well have a big multi-person match, featuring Styles, Hardy, Angle, Anderson, Sting and a returning James Storm. Mainly because they've had him beat all of them and kill their momentum, so putting them all in a big match is probably the only thing left to do. Storm needs to be the next one with the belt and it's a shame he didn't do it after that great build last month. But Roode is so good at being the top heel, it'd also be silly to dethrone him. Tough spot.

Scott:
My preference would be for someone like Styles, Storm or even Aries. Of course, I’m probably going to get a Hogan, Sting or Hardy instead.

3) Paul Heyman returned to Raw last week, representing Brock Lesnar, after a lengthy absence from WWE Television. Are you a Paul Heyman guy (or girl)? What’s your favourite memory of Paul Heyman?

Blake:
I LOVE PAUL HEYMAN! Favourite moment? Too easy. June 12, 2005, the Hammerstein Ballroom, New York City: ECW One Night Stand. The entire shoot promo was gold, but my favourite bit was when speaking to JBL. "The only reason you were WWE Champion for a year was because Triple H didn't wanna work Tuesdays!"

David:
I'm a Paul Heyman guy! Don't actually let him run your company, but give him a microphone and watch the magic happen. For me, it's Heyman's 15-minute worked-shoot promo in the lead-up to Survivor Series 2001. "Death to sports entertainment, death to the WWF!"

Kirsty:
I love Paul Heyman, he's one of the best talkers in the biz. From any era. To my mind he was the the reason Brock Lesnar got over so much during his first WWE run. I loved when he was on the commentary desk - too many great lines there to pick just one - but I'm with Blake about the ECW One Night Stand moment - that was pure gold.

Dion:
I definitely enjoy Heyman. But oddly enough, my favourite Heyman moment is him commentating the main event of WrestleMania X-Seven. I know Heyman has had far, far more important moments in the industry, but it was such an epic moment in time and Heyman's voice added weight to the importance of the moment.

Stevie:
I'm a huge Heyman guy. I remember becoming a fan after seeing him in the Beyond The Mat doco, where he gave those cult leader inspirational speeches. I don't like to pick favourites but the ones mentioned already are what I remember most fondly.

Scott:
Does anyone else feel the urge to punch Heyman on the nose to silence his nasal whine whenever he appears on the television? No? Just me?

4) Kevin Steen won the ROH World Championship from Davey Richards at Border Wars this past weekend. Does Steen have what it takes to be the face of the company? Are you more, or less interested in ROH with him as its main player?

Blake:
If we had ROH here, I'd be watching it constantly. Kevin Steen as World Champ? He's bloody earned it. I look forward to seeing where this progresses.

David:
I don't want to sound like I'm being overly critical, but I think I'm slightly less interested in ROH with Steen as the champ. Ring of Honor has a habit of giving people the belt just after you wanted to see them with it, I think, and then it starts their reign off slightly less spectacularly than it could have been done. Granted, I only know about the last few ROH shows from text-based reports because of all their iPPV hassles, and I am interested in Best in the World if they manage to get everything fixed up on the technical side of things, but my interest in Steen did peak a little while ago.

Kirsty:
I'm sorry to say that I really don't keep up with ROH. There is some great talent over there from what I have seen. It'd be awesome to get their show on NZ screens but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Dion:
I've only caught a couple of ROH shows in the past few years, so haven't seen much of Kevin Steen at all - other than his much publicised return. Still, Jim Cornette is one of the smartest men in wrestling, so if Steen is holding the gold, you can be sure it's with good reason.

Stevie:
It's awesome that Steen has won. I was there live at Synergy last month and he had the crowd in the palm of his hand every second he was out there. In fact the only chant heard more often throughout the night, other than "YES!", was "STEEN!". I look forward to this potential new direction for ROH.

Scott:
Honestly, if I ever heard anything about ROH in 2012 that wasn’t negative (iPPV issues, best talent abandoning them for WWE and TNA, etc) I might care a bit more about this question. The IWC’s always been supportive of Ring of Honor, but even that seems to be shifting.

5) WWE has announced it will be moving all future tapings of NXT to Full Sail University in Florida. Is this a good way to help give the show its own identity, separate to Superstars, or is NXT doomed no matter what happens?

Blake:
NXT doomed? NXT is the best WWE show on television right now! They've got wrestling, they've got storylines, they've got characters with depth. Honestly, the only reason RAW and SmackDown are starting to get better again is because they're following the NXT model (aka, traditional pro wrestling). But to the crux of the question, I think this will give NXT an even better feel. It's gonna be indie-esque, and that will appeal to TNA fans. Good idea on WWE's part... maybe...

David:
It's definitely going to make NXT stand out. It's also going to make it seem less of a WWE production - which would make sense because it's going to be partly produced by some of the Full Sail students, apparently - which could either be a blessing, or a curse. I think it'll make things interesting, in the sort of way you might tune in to FCW, if we could, to see the up-and-comers thrive in their own territory, but at the same time I think it'll look a bit more like a major indy show with former WWE superstars, rather than a B-grade WWE show, if you follow me, so it mightn't hook a member of the WWE Universe seeing it for the first time. Then again, it only airs on the internet in the US so you have to know what it is to watch it in the first place. Good move, NXT.

Kirsty:
I think it'll definitely help NXT develop a separate identity that will move it away from just being WWE's #3 show. That said, I've always viewed NXT as somewhat of a feeder for RAW and SmackDown and since it was taped ahead of SmackDown it was a good way for WWE to gauge how a live WWE audience reacted to them. I think it's important for WWE to bring guys from FCW into a show that has less pressure than RAW and SmackDown so that their initial taste of the company and being on the road isn't quite so intimidating, and moving NXT to a static location will defeat that purpose. All in all, I don't think it's a great idea. But then, I'm not sure what could fix NXT...

Dion:
I think NXT does have it's own identity with it's unique match filming style and the type of talent they use already. Although I haven't followed the show in months, it does sound like a good move. And even better in terms of, the 'E aren't giving up on it. Far from it, it sounds like it could be a great move.

Stevie:
Love it. Imagine if they had done this with ECW when they brought it back? I like that it gives a different feel to the show. And the involvement of students behind the scenes will either be great for them or bad for us. Either way, I'll definitely be watching. Especially with the rumour that Regal and JR will be commentating it.

Scott:
NXT is far from doomed, and this move would seem to be cementing its position as the “developmental” show future WWE stars.
