NXT: More New Faces

The new seasons of NXT headed into its second week with a flurry of matches, showcasing successful debuts from Seth Rollins, Leo Kruger and Richie Steamboat.  The Ascension also impressed against the more experienced tag team of The Usos, while Derrick Bateman and Johnny Curtis.

Seth Rollins was the first new face to appear on the second episode of NXT, impressing with a quick victory over his opponent, Jiro.  Rollins was explosive in the ring, running in from all angles with quick kicks on Jiro.  A spectacular enziguri set Rollins up for his finisher, a running curb stomp he calls The Blackout.

Jinder Mahal made his first appearance on the new season of NXT continuing in the same aggressive fashion as he's come to demonstrate over recent months.  This week is was a young opponent called Jason Jordan who suffered at the hands of the focused Mahal, suffering a battering before quickly submitting to the Camel Clutch.

Known as the "South African Aristotle", Leo Kruger introduced himself as NXT's "pride leader, the alpha lion."  His swift victory via a sleeper hold over his opponent Aiden English put the other young stars of NXT on notice that he intends to be a force to reckon with.

The Usos made their NXT return, facing the sinister tag team of The Ascension in this week's fourth match.  The Ascension's Kenneth Cameron made a mistake early on by trying to match head butts with the thick skull of Jimmy Uso, a battle Cameron came out on the losing end of.  But Cameron was able to fight his way back into contention, and a sneaky double-team move by The Ascension saw Jimmy Uso tumble to the floor as he was whipped by Cameron through ropes held apart by Conor O'Brian.  This turned the battle back in The Ascension's favour, and with a flurry of continual tags the dark pairing isolated Jimmy in their corner, stomping him down time and time again.  Jey Uso attempted to stage a rescue, only to end up knocked outside of the ring himself, meanwhile another quick tag set The Ascension up for their double-team finisher, The Downcast.

Next up was Richie Steamboat, son of Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, who made his first steps towards becoming a star in his own right by a quick victory over his opponent, the Canadian Rick Victor.  With sharp arm drags learnt from his father, Steamboat was able to keep Victor off balance until he could strike with his finishing move, a spinning sleeper slam he calls Sling Blade.

SmackDown's Antonio Cesaro made an impactful debut on NXT, impressing his companion Aksana as he tore apart his opponent Dante Dash.  The former rugby player didn't take long before slamming his opponent down with the Neutraliser, an inverted belly-to-back slam.

Finally, NXT's main event was a short bout between NXT regulars, Derrick Bateman and Johnny Curtis.  Curtis tried to upset Bateman from the outset by slapping him across the face before rolling under the ropes to lead Bateman on a chase around the ringside area.  Sliding back into the ring Curtis planned to drop a knee on Bateman as he followed, but Bateman saw Curtis' move coming, and pulled up short so Curtis' knee met nothing but the hard edge of the mat.  Bateman then slid into the ring and sent Curtis to the turnbuckle with a drop kick before pulling Curtis out of the ropes only to slam his head twice more into the top turnbuckle.  Bateman then returned Curtis' slap, before once again whipping Curtis into the turnbuckle.  But this time as Bateman charged in Curtis ducked to one side, and Bateman flew knees-first into the turnbuckle, falling hard to the canvas.

Curtis then took control, working over Bateman's left leg, nearly obtaining a submission with a crotch-wriggling variation on an Indian death lock.  But when Curtis released his grip for a moment to reset his position Bateman was able to kick him away, and despite obviously favouring his leg Bateman was able to work himself back into the bout with some clotheslines, before slamming Curtis down with an STO.  Bateman's finisher, the DBT, soon followed, slamming Curtis' head slammed down with a snapmare driver to secure the victory.

  • Jinder Mahal def. Jason Jordan
  • Leo Kruger def. Aiden English
  • The Ascension def. The Usos
