Destination X is behind us and with it the shock win of Austin Aries over long-time TNA World Heavyweight Champion Bobby Roode. We take a look at what this might mean for the X-Division mainstay.
We also discuss Zack Ryder's temporary elevation to SmackDown General Manager - is a second push on the way for Long Island Iced Z?
Money in the Bank is coming up - and there are two briefcases on the line. How are those matches stacking up?
All this and more in this week's edition of Gimme Five.
1. Destination X is behind us. How did the show stack up? Match of the night? Dud of the night? MVP?
Kirsty: I was on the edge of my seat for a lot of Destination X, what a great show. There was some great action in the X-Division Championship matches, but Christopher Daniels and AJ Styles proved once again that they are the cream of the crop, even though they're the veterans of TNA. I hope the younger guys on the roster were watching that Last Man Standing match closely, because THAT is how you do that. And they tie for MVP, for mine.
Disappointing not to see a Knockouts match - clearly it had to give way to the X-Division scene - and how about Austin Aries taking out the big belt? That I was NOT expecting to see! More on that in Q2...
Blake: 9 matches, 8 of which were PPV quality. Great night for TNA I feel. MVP has to go to Austin Aries, the luckiest man that ever lived. He's set up something incredible for the X Division stars and has walked the talk; well done. Dud has to go to the Ultimate X match; what a waste of time and talent that was. Match of the night? Nothing stood out to me really, but the Kenny King/Douglas Williams match was pretty cool IMAO.
Scott: Yes, I actually watched this TNA pay-per-view! David Dunn was raving about it, so I booked the replay. The free-to-air promo package building up Austin Aries prior to the show got me really excited... and then the actual show opened with a bunch of jobbers. Doing flippity-floppity jobber stuff. I felt a bit let down, even more so when the Ultimate X match seemed to be so messy.
But it got better. Daniels versus Styles was damn intense, and even though spoiled I found myself edge-of-the-seat, cheering for Aries to beat Roode in the main event. Great passion, great drama, great recently. A very good show indeed.
David: I think that could have been TNA's best show all year. Granted, it was essentially a three match card, but how good were those three matches? Amazing. And, with all the X Division qualifiers at the start I couldn't help but feel like I did when I first saw TNA back in 2005 - everything seemed so new and exciting. AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels, who have wrestled hundreds of times, managed to turn things up to 11 and just blew me away with a nasty Last Man Standing match, the obvious match of the night. Ultimate X takes out the dud of the night award for not delivering quite what I was expecting. And Austin Aries, all the way from the Before the Bell preview show through to the confetti-filled post-match celebration, is undoubtedly MVP.
Dion: It was all about Aries and Roode for me. I was hanging out for that one and it didn't disappoint. Even though the event was in the small iMPACT! Zone, that crowd went NUTS!
Stevie: My thoughts on this event are exactly the same as David's - except that the opening matches reminded me of a lot of '98 WCW PPVs, where you'd see a lot of talented smaller wrestlers you didn't know so well, strutting their stuff. Loved the event and loved Aries winning.
Luke: I thought it was the best show TNA have done in years. The entire show was solid as a rock, packed with thrills and moments that had me on the edge of my seat. From the emotional speech from Jesse Sorensen to the brutal confrontation between Styles and Daniels, the show was worth every cent. My favourite match of the night was the eighth war between Joe and Angle but the MVP of the night goes to Aries. What an amazing match and such an emotional victory for A Double. If you haven't seen this, find it and watch it. It's worth it.
2. Austin Aries took the TNA World Heavyweight Championship from Bobby Roode in the main event of Destination X, bringing Roode’s record-setting reign to an end. Do you see Aries holding the title for a long time, or will Roode be taking the belt back in an inevitable rematch?
Kirsty: Whew. To tell you the truth I think it was not a good decision by TNA, for all that Aries deserves a shot at the top spot and for all that it was a great feel-good moment. For starters, Roode has been such a dominant champion for so long, I really feel that he needed to be dethroned by someone with more to win/lose - that someone being, of course, James Storm. If they put the belt back on Roode and have Storm take it off him, then it cheapens all three guys and dilutes their reigns. Aries deserves the belt, but for it to be really significant he needs to keep it for a good stretch. I think the timing was wrong but hopefully it won't have a negative impact on Aries, because he really does deserve a push.
Blake: There's going to be Roode vs. Storm at Bound for Glory, I'd bet my liver on it. If it's not for the title, I think that match loses some of its potential worth. The title run will be short but sweet for A Double.
Scott: Either Aries is going to be a transitional champ, or we’re going to be robbed of James Storm challenging Roode for the title at Bound for Glory. Either outcome is less than ideal. While I loved seeing Aries win, it seems a bit out-of-the-blue in terms of medium-term angles.
David: Everyone was expecting Bobby Roode and James Storm to main event Bound For Glory, and I don't know that Aries winning the title has to change that. A full calendar year of Roode screwing people out of the title left, right and centre would have worn pretty thin, but now we have the chance to see something new, at least for a couple of months. I'm picking Aries will get to have a couple of defenses, to prove his win wasn't a fluke, but ultimately Roode will snatch the title back just in time to drop it to Storm at BFG.
Dion: I'd like to think Aries will hold the title for some time, but I do think we'll see Roode holding the strap at Bound for Glory. TNA fans seem to be buzzing about Aries' title win, here's hoping it's a forgotten moment (or movement) in a few weeks time.
Stevie: I imagine we'll see the B4G main event we all assume is coming. But then, maybe they'll shake it up and Aries will defend against the winner of the tournament and Storm/Roode will happen as a contendership match. In any event, it's great he's champ and hopefully he gets to hold it longer than a week...
Luke: There will definitely be a rematch between the two, but I feel Aries will be holding onto the championship for a lengthy reign. He has a huge fan base and is the hottest thing in TNA right now, it would be stupid to take the championship from him prematurely.
3. Zack Ryder is in charge of SmackDown this week, winning the right to be General Manager in a Great American Bash battle royal. Is this the start of a new push for the Long Island Iced Z, or will Ryder be headed back to obscurity after he’s done running SmackDown?
Kirsty: I don't think he'll get another push, to be honest. I think that WWE are aware of Ryder's popularity and it's easy to put him in spots like this that keep the fans happy and Ryder swimming around the periphery of the action, without actually investing too much in him in terms of championships or main event matches.
I fear that Ryder is in for a Santino-like career in WWE. Yes, Santino's getting some decent matches in the mid-card now, but how long did it take?
Blake: Ryder deserves a mid-card push, no doubt. However, there are many superstars who are much better and deserve a push (see Hunico). I don't mind seeing Ryder pushed in a mid-card feud, or in a non-wrestling capacity; I just don't want him winning any more main events. So is this the start of a new push? No. It's a ratings experiment.
Scott: As Kirsty said, Ryder’s now SmackDown’s Santino. And that’s a bit of a shame, because he’s a better wrestler than that. Mind you, he’s still doing better than his former tag team partner, the also-talented Curt Hawkins.
David: How far do Zack's powers go? Can he alter the Money in the Bank card and put himself in either a title or a ladder match? If so, he could guarantee himself a spot on TV for months to come, but if not this could be another one step forward, two steps back scenario Ryder almost always finds himself in.
Dion: I don't think we'll see any massive push for Ryder (although by virtue of winning the Battle Royal, maybe he already is in the midst of one?), but he's definitely a popular figure amongst "the Universe", so it's great to see him involved in this way. I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun. That said, if Santino can get a singles title run, I'm sure Long Island Iced Z can.
Stevie: I think they like having Zack around for when they have a hole in their programming. He's not going to get another big push but he's certainly going to stick around.
Luke: I don't think this is a push at all, more of a promotional tactic to sell a Zack Ryder DVD that is coming out. Personally, it's great to see him back on television. The WWE NEED to get behind this guy and give him a huge push but I guess he's paying his dues like everyone else at the moment.
4. TNA has filled up the X Division with several independent names in the build-up to Destination X, and WWE is reportedly interested in Johnny Gargano, PAC and Sara Del Rey. If you could sign one name from the indies to either TNA or WWE, who would you like to see given a chance to shine on a worldwide stage?
Kirsty: Does it have to be the American indies? Because I'll tell you who could shake up the Knockouts or the Divas and that's IPW's Evie. She's been progressing in leaps and bounds and is, to my mind, a top-level Knockout in the making. Of course I'd like to see Evie get a shot at big money in WWE, but her talent would be wasted there. She'd be a fantastic Knockout and would - as she is already doing - make New Zealand proud.
Blake: Two names pop into mind; Evie in the Knockouts division (where women's wrestling is kind of appreciated) and the man formerly known as Davey Deluxeo, Dave O'Connor as the new face of SmackDown.
Scott: TRAVIS F**KING BANKS.
David: In the past this question would have been a bit harder, because not everyone on the indies had/has that "WWE look". But with CM Punk as the WWE Champion, and Austin Aries holding TNA's title, gone are the days of having to be 6'4" and jacked to the gills. It's not exactly a case of WWE or TNA needing this guy, but I think Mike Bennett would be better suited to one of the big two companies than he is in Ring of Honor. Not to say he doesn't fit in in ROH, but he's definitely got more of a WWE vibe to him than a lot of the ROH roster. And, if he were to bring girlfriend Maria Kanellis with him, I would be rather pleased.
Dion: To be honest, I just don't have the time to follow the indies any more. I haven't watched a ROH event in over a year. If I had to pick one person from the New Zealand scene, I think our own Evie would slot in quite nicely in NXT on her way to SmackDown!
Stevie: One can hope the PAC and Sara Del Rey rumours are true. I agree that Mike Bennett looks like he's priming himself as a prototypical WWE wrestler. Frankly, I'm mainly just hoping that TNA keep Kenny King and Sonjay around, I've been waiting ages for them to be on a bigger stage again (not that Sonjay wasn't having a lot of success over in India). I'm all for a Travis Banks run in TNA. Imagine him in the X Division? It'd be brilliant.
Luke: If I could poach some talent from the indies, I would send Davey Richards to WWE - then WWE would basically be Ring of Honor from the past ten years. Ha! There is a lot of great talent out there such as Robbie Eagles, Madison Eagles... New Zealand talent like Evie, Kingi, Dal Knox, Travis Banks to name a few, would all look great on the international stages.
5. Money in the Bank is on pay-per-view this Monday. Which of the two ladder matches are you most interested in seeing, and why?
Kirsty: Well, obviously the outcome of the WWE Championship match will be interesting, but I'm keen to see who's going to take out that fully-stacked World Heavyweight Championship match. As I've said before, I view the winner of the briefcase as someone deserving of a big push, and it'll be interesting to see which one of these mid-carders takes it out - there are quite a few who could make a great run with the briefcase.
Blake: Well there's really only one MitB Ladder match; the other is nothing more than a fatal-four way, number 1 contender ladder match featuring a big red briefcase. So I'm looking forward to the Intellectual Savior of the Unwashed Masses claiming his rightful title as championship contender. Why Mr. Sandow you ask? Well, the Greatest Mind in Professional Wrestling understands what Mr. Sandow is trying to achieve. We will try to aid you in your intellectual upliftment. It has been your pleasure.
Scott: It will have to be the World Heavyweight Championship match, just because the winner is less certain, there’s a real chance we’ll see a bolter get pushed to the top, and the younger and more agile men will surely put on a better match. I’m still very nonplussed about the make-up of the WWE Championship match. There seems very little scope for surprise or “OH MY GOD” spots with that line up.
David: The World Heavyweight Championship Contract Money in the Bank Ladder Match is more in keeping with the spirit of the original Money in the Bank bouts, isn't it? I think it's going to be a lot harder to predict than its WWE Championship counterpart, and while it might wind up being a bit chaotic, with less structure than the other, that's kind of the whole point. I'm not even sure who I want to win, let alone who will actually do it, but it's certainly one of those things you feel good about paying $25 to see.
Dion: I'm looking forward to the Fatal Fourway most. Seeing Jericho involved is reason alone to look forward to this match, though I do like the idea of Cena getting a spot, too. It'll be interesting to see if someone pulls out some "Kofi Kingston-esque" innovation in this one!
Stevie: The WWE one holds zero interest to me, in both story and in-ring action. The World title one though should provide a number of great moments. Here's hoping Kidd gets some time to shine. I'm picking this will finally be where Cody or Dolph get their due.
Luke: I am looking forward to the SmackDown ladder match, mainly because it appeals more to me with its more athletic, hungrier workers. Though, I do feel we will see a few surprises from the RAW ladder match...
