G5: RAW, NXT, Ziggler vs. Ryder & More
Written by NZPWI G5 panel

RAW has moved back to Friday nights in New Zealand, so as of now the 1000th episode has not screened. Nevertheless, the team discusses the upcoming show and whether or not they've been spoiled.

We also take a look at how the new season of NXT is shaping up, and we bring you our thoughts on our own current favourites in the business right now.

All this and more in this week's edition of Gimme Five.

1. RAW’s now gone back to Friday nights in New Zealand, just as the 1000th episode goes to air. While we won’t discuss the landmark show this week on Gimme 5, to respect fans who wish to remain unspoiled, it seems many kiwi fans have done all they can to see the show as soon as possible. What about you? Have you sought out the 1000th episode already? Will you try to remain unspoiled for this, or future RAWs? Do you have any tips for avoiding RAW spoilers before it airs in New Zealand, or do you think it’s a losing battle?

Blake:
I don't like ads, I don't like waiting; why wouldn't I just use YouTube? It's better, faster, easier, and... wait, am I meant to be responsible here? Hmm, kids, ignore what I just said. I totally wait until the show's on The BOX every Friday night!

Kirsty:
I'm unspoiled so far and that's how I like it. I had no trouble remaining unspoiled for Friday Night RAW before the show moved to Tuesday nights, so I'm untroubled now that it's moved back to Friday nights. I actually prefer Friday Night RAW, although if something really, REALLY big goes down I admit it's hard not to hear about it if you read the dirt sheets. Things like Vince's limo blowing up, for instance - I knew about that when it happened.

Overall though, I don't find it difficult to remain unspoiled and I certainly prefer it that way. Can't wait for the 1000th episode on Friday!

Luke:
With RAW 1000 being added to the iSKY lineup, I wasn't too bothered that it wasn't on air. I was happy having RAW on Tuesday nights because if anything big happened, I could see it immediately. Although, I would have liked SKY to continue airing RAW on Tuesday nights and replayed it on Friday nights if ratings were the problem. Tuesday nights are harsh for school kids and it's been traditional to have wrestling on Friday nights. Either way, I'm not bothered too much by the move as social media basically spoils it regardless of what day it is on.

Dion:
Thanks to the folks at the BOX who worked after hours to bring us RAW 1000 on iSKY this week, that's how I watched it.

Remaining spoiler free is simple. Turn off your interwebs. Other than that, in today's social media-centric world, it's a losing battle.

Stevie:
I read the report and YouTubed the bits that I was interested in. It's near impossible, if you're online much, to avoid spoilers. It's a shame.

David:
I've seen RAW 1000 already - but with other, less historic episodes I've got no problem waiting until Friday. As long as you keep off WWE.com (obviously), and Facebook and Twitter (if you're following all the WWE accounts) on the Tuesday, it's not that hard to avoid spoilers. Just make NZPWI the only wrestling website you visit, and you'll be fine!

2. Joseph Park’s been showing more and more traces of Abyss recently. Things seem to be heading towards a conclusion for this interesting mid-card TNA storyline – how would you like to see it develop and conclude?

Blake:
Interesting? I hate to sound like Miz, but really? There're some good stories on NXT; this ain't one of 'em.

Kirsty:
It's been an interesting evolution; I like that Abyss has had some depth to his character(s) in recent storylines, it's shown he has versatility. I do think that the Abyss character is so beloved that he'll return to it full time in the near future and Joseph Park will likely not be heard from again.

Luke:
I have enjoyed following this storyline and I've been intrigued as to where it was heading. I think it will end up concluding with Parks standing up to Bully Ray once and for all, though I do not know how they will bring back the Abyss character through him fully. Maybe he will go insane? We can only wait and see.

Dion:
I've really enjoyed the storyline. It's been quite compelling. It'd be interesting to see Abyss revealed as having some multiple personality disorder and seeing him switch between Joseph and Abyss for a few more months. It could make for some really entertaining TV!

Stevie:
It's one of my favourites things they've been doing. I'm hoping they keep it nice and slow, having more of Abyss come through, until he's fully revealed. He's been doing a stunning acting job, looking out of place in the ring, so it'd be cool to see him fully emerge as the monster while still in his suit.

David:
The whole Black Reign thing would work quite well. Neither Abyss nor Joseph realise they are the same person, and the two of them just keep looking for each other for weeks to come. The main thing is to keep at the pace we're currently at - no need to rush.

3. It’s been a month since the new look NXT hit our screens. Your thoughts so far? Any bright lights and rising stars who have caught your eye?

Blake:
Bray Wyatt, Paige, The Ascension. The Greatest Mind in Professional Wrestling says these will be United States, Divas, and WWE Tag Team Champions.

Kirsty:
I only watched the first couple of episodes. I know lots of people have found it a refreshing change and although I think the new format is a definite improvement, it hasn't really grabbed me.

Luke:
Personally, I'm loving it. It is great to see young, uprising stars before they hit the main roster - even if they are green. What I also enjoy about the show is that it is a wrestling based show. We have seen some great matches with Tyson Kidd, Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel in the last few weeks as well as some solid matches from Seth Rollins, Steamboat as well as having the next greatest gimmick in WWE take life in Bray Wyatt. The show is definitely what NXT should have been from the beginning and won't appeal to every wrestling fan, but I do recommend it to everyone.

Dion:
I've really enjoyed it. I'm not watching it religiously but do check in on occassion. I'm enjoying the new format and still "getting to know" the roster.

Stevie:
Digging it. It's a much-needed aspect of the business. Bray Wyatt is going to be a star, he's wonderful in his role. Seth Rollins is great too.

David:
It's better than almost all the other seasons of NXT, but it's not quite that revolutionary show I thought it might be in its first couple of weeks. I like Seth Rollins - although I'm not quite sure why - and I am very interested in the Divas-to-be.

4. Soon after this year’s WrestleMania Dolph Ziggler made an online challenge to Zack Ryder for a match at WrestleMania XXIX for Ryder’s Internet Championship. This week Ziggler, who is now holding a Money in the Bank contract, repeated that he still wants to wrestle Ziggler at next year’s WrestleMania, and he’d like it to be for the World Heavyweight Championship. Would this match interest you? Do you see any chance that a match between these two at WrestleMania could occur, be it for a title or not?

Blake:
I've mentioned before that Ric Flair is one of the most over-rated wrestlers of all time. How appropriate that the Woo Woo Woo kid is now one of the most over-rated. Don't get me wrong; I like the original character, but when Ryder isn't facing Ziggler (or, surprisingly, Kane), he stinks. I don't really mind who Ziggler faces at WrestleMania; whichever way it goes, it'll be the best match of the night.

Kirsty:
Anything that puts Dolph Ziggler in a main event spot is fine by me, but I don't think the same can be said of Zack Ryder. Don't get me wrong - he's hugely popular and a hard worker, and he's done a brilliant job of forcing WWE to take notice of him, but to my mind he doesn't have that "it" factor, and Ziggler most definitely does. I can think of much worthier opponents for Ziggler at WrestleMania, if indeed he is challenging for/defending the World Heavyweight Championship.

Luke:
This year we saw two fresh championship main events for WrestleMania with Punk/Jericho and Daniel Bryan/Sheamus so yeah, It would be great to see Ziggler and Ryder take the main stage and prove they have what it takes to be the marquee players of the new era. I hope the WWE invests a little more time in Ryder though, time is running thin.

Dion:
No. I'd like to see Ziggler involved, but I don't think Ryder will be a big enough draw, even in nine months time.

Stevie:
I don't see it happening but hey, if they did choose to elevate Ryder I wouldn't complain. I'm expecting Ziggler will be in a high profile match at least.

David:
It's an interesting match if it's billed as one of the main bouts on the card. To have those two wrestle for the World Heavyweight Championship (held by Ziggler at the time) would be amazing, yes. But without a title in the mix it'd seem like Ziggler had been relegated to the midcard again, and that's not something he deserves.

5. Who is your favourite wrestler working right now? Don’t think, just say the first name that comes to mind. Why? What do you like so much about him or her?

Blake:
Damian Sandow, of course. A man of intelligence in a world of brutish moronity. He cares for his cause and, frankly, so do I.

Kirsty:
Chris Jericho. He's always been #2 on my list, just behind Bret Hart. As for what I like about him - well, the obvious hardly needs to be belaboured, but in short he's the total package. He's immensely talented in the ring and on the stick, he's incredibly versatile, he's intuitive, innovative, and entertaining, and he's pretty damned easy on the eye to boot. Plus I'm a Fozzy fan.

CM Punk and Daniel Bryan tie for a very close third.

Luke:
Daniel Bryan. Why? The guy is a wrestling machine and has bucketloads of charisma. He has proven through his heel character that he can captivate a crowd and he continues to improve. Not only has he found his niche in the main event scene but he has stolen the show with CM Punk every time they wrestle together. 2012 has been the year of Daniel Bryan and we can only hope his star will continue to shine.

Dion:
I'm really enjoying Daniel Bryan right now. I always have, but the new dimension to his character, and his growth in that side of the business has been fantastic to watch.

Stevie:
Ziggler (Shh, don't tell Punk). Terrible name but the way he sells... it's Curt Hennig reborn. I love it. His character still feels like it needs a bit of a reset but he's so close to being a big star. If WWE put effort behind him, he'd go far.

David:
Austin Aries? That's what don't-think-just-say came up with, anyway. I'm not sure that's right - but why not, right? You can find a lot less entertaining wrestlers than A Double. I haven't popped like I did for his title win since Money in the Bank 2011, so I'm pretty high on Aries at the moment. Got to give an honourable mention to AJ Styles too, if only for his schedule over the next week or so...
