Editorial: Ringside at ROH

I made one of the best purchases of my life just shy of a month ago now. On a bit of a whim, I decided to become a ringside member at ROHwrestling.com.

For just US$7.99 (about NZ$9.80) per month, I suddenly had access to a huge video library of Ring of Honor matches, interviews, complete events and more - spanning all the way from the company's first shows in 2002 right up to their latest TV episodes of 2012.

I've always considered myself to be a ROH fan, but a bit of a passive one who mainly kept up with things via online reports. "Oh, Kevin Steen won the title? That's cool" and so on. But over the past month or so I've become more and more enamoured with the product.

I even went as far as to buy tickets to Supercard of Honor XII at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York next year. Yeah, that big of a fan.

We're all aware of the stories of men like CM Punk, Christopher Daniels, Daniel Bryan and Samoa Joe who honed their skills in ROH before moving on to WWE or TNA.

More recently ROH has looked more like a WWE developmental territory than ever before with Antonio Cesaro, Kassisus Ohno, Seth Rollins and a bunch of others being plucked from their roster to make the move to Florida.

As exciting as it is to be familiar with these guys when they debut in WWE, it's equally thrilling to get to watch some of the best talent on the independent scene wrestling with no restrictions before they change up their style to fit in with the WWE or TNA product.

Sara Del Rey has long been touted as one of the best unsigned female wrestlers in the United States - although it's rumoured WWE have locked her into a developmental deal. She'll have probably her last match with ROH this Sunday (New Zealand time) at the Boiling Point iPPV when she teams up with Eddie Edwards to take on Maria Kanellis and Mike Bennett.

For every Del Rey there's a Kevin Steen or a Davey Richards - someone who might not quite have the WWE look (although with CM Punk and Daniel Bryan as two of the company's most recognisable faces, what that look is is being severely challenged as of late) but can put on an amazing match when left to their own devices.

Then there are the names you've heard of who're turning their careers around and wrestling on their terms. Wrestling's Greatest Tag Team, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin, have really lived up to their moniker in ROH. And Maria Kanellis will prove she's more than just a ditzy backstage interviewer or Playboy cover girl with her match this Sunday.

I know this probably sounds like an advertorial - it isn't, I'm actually out of pocket with that ringside membership - but if you like professional wrestling, you owe it to yourself to dedicate a portion of your free time to keeping up with Ring of Honor.

Start the Sunday wrestling marathon on the BOX a bit earlier and check out the ROH TV show online. You won't be disappointed.

Ring of Honor excluded, I'm feeling a little out of touch with the wrestling world this week after spending the weekend in Auckland. The reason I was there, of course, was for AJ Styles' whirlwind promotional visit.

We've got a quick recap of AJ's weekend in the city here, not to mention an exclusive interview with the former TNA World Heavyweight Champion coming this Friday.

If, like me, you missed out on some of the BOX's weekend wrestling line-up don't worry - catch up with all the happenings from Raw, Impact Wrestling, NXT, and SmackDown in our Television section before this week's episodes go to air.

Furthermore, you can get all the latest updates from NZPWI delivered straight to your Facebook newsfeed by liking our Facebook page here.

Before I go, I'll also point out that if you're a New Zealand resident who can tell us what day and time Impact Wrestling airs on the BOX, you'll be in the draw to win one of three XL Impact Wrestling T-shirts.

Win a T-shirt, or at very least be kept up to date with all the latest wrestling news and action? You can't lose, guys!
