SmackDown: Heating up for the Rumble

SmackDown kicked off with the newly-graduated Team Hell No making their way to the ring. Despite their progress in anger management, disagreements between the pair still exist, namely who's going to win the Royal Rumble. Before they had a chance to get too snarly with each other, they were interrupted by the Big Show, who informed them that no-one cares about their plans. Never one to let a chance to verbalise go by, along came Team Rhodes Scholars, who reminded Team Hell No that they should be focussed on their tag team match, not the Rumble match. To complete this main event scene, out came the World Heavyweight Champion, Alberto Del Rio, and his faithful sidekick Ricardo.

To the surprise of absolutely no-one, General Manager Booker T made his entrance, informing the crowd at large that the main event would be a 6-man tag team elimination match, with Team Hell No aligning with Alberto Del Rio to take on Team Rhodes Scholars and the Big Show.

The main event itself saw Del Rio and Cody Rhodes kick things off, with Del Rio hitting a snapmare and a gut buster, followed by a 2 count. Damien Sandow and Daniel Bryan tagged in next, with Bryan cornering Sandow and pummelling him with Yes kicks. Bryan tagged in Kane, who nailed Sandow with a dropkick followed by a chokeslam, making Sandow the first elimination. Kane then hit the Big Show with a running DDT and got a 2 count on the giant. Unfortunately for Kane, he then walked into a WMD, which eliminated him from the match.

A double clothesline between Daniel Bryan and Cody Rhodes saw both men on the mat, straining to tag in their partners. Rhodes was successful and tagged in the Big Show, who attempted a chokeslam on Bryan. The tag team champ managed to kick out, and then chopped the giant down with a dropkick to the back of Show's knees. Show retaliated with a chop to the chest, almost putting Daniel over the ropes, but Bryan skinned the cat and re-entered the ring... only to be nailed with the second WMD of the night, making him the third man eliminated.

Del Rio and Big Show kept control reasonably evenly spaced, until Del Rio managed to send Show to the outside, where it looked as if the giant may have tweaked his knee. It kept him out of the ring long enough to be counted out, whereupon Del Rio hit an enziguri on Cody Rhodes and picked up the win for his team.

Not to be outdone, the Big Show, still at ringside, dropped Del Rio with a knockout punch and proceeded to turn the announcer's desk over on the champ, after which he counted to ten... possibly as a preview of what Del Rio can expect in their Last Man Standing match at the Royal Rumble.

In other action, The Rock and CM Punk continued their war of words, treating the SmackDown crowd to a verbal display of sheer intensity. While Punk continued to proclaim that he has nothing to do with the Shield or their recent actions, Ambrose, Reigns and Rollins contemplated the champ in steeley silence before heeding Punk's warning to stay away from him and his match against the Rock at the Royal Rumble. The Great One himself arrived at that point, informing Punk that he doesn't care if Punk is working with the Shield or not - either way, the walls are closing in. He promised Punk, Heyman and the WWE Universe that he will be the next WWE Champion, and stared the champ down as SmackDown went off the air.
