NZWPW: IPW Champion Kingi comes to Proving Grounds

130221_provinggroundsProject Mayhem will have to put their differences aside this weekend if they hope to overcome IPW Champion Kingi and his partner Tykade at NZWPW Proving Grounds.

The duo of James Shaw and Johnny Idol are already on unstable ground, with a rift growing between the pair ever since Idol used his Right 2 Challenge and won the NZWPW Championship at Mayhem in the Valley last year.

"We were best friends," says Shaw, "but ever since he cashed in his Right 2 Challenge contract he has become a bit of a [expletive] face, mind my language".

"Do I really need support, and to give support to someone like that?"

The answer, for this week at least, is yes. Idol and Shaw will have to work as a cohesive unit if they hope to pick up a victory over the tandem of Kingi and Tykade.

Individually, Kingi and Tykade are two of the most decorated New Zealand wrestlers in modern history. Kingi is the reigning IPW Champion - a title he has held four times - and is a former tag team champion, as well as IPW South Pacific and NZPWI Invitational Grand Champion. Tykade is a former two-time NZWPW Champion, and has also held the NZWPW Tag Team Championship.

While Project Mayhem are former tag team title holders, and Idol is the reigning NZWPW Champion, even James Shaw knows the threat they will face in Wainuiomata: "Our two opponents are by far the two most feared men at the moment in New Zealand wrestling."

This Saturday, Proving Grounds will be a wake-up call for everyone involved, says Shaw. Will Project Mayhem be able to stick together and take out Kingi and Tykade, or will their friendship come to an end once and for all?

Either way, you won't want to miss this rare opportunity to see both the IPW and NZWPW Champions in the ring at the same time.

Fresh off a three month stint in Japan, Travis Banks returns to NZWPW to go one-on-one with IPW Tag Team Champion Brother T.

Banks was involved in an IPW Championship match at Unleashed last Saturday, in which Kingi pinned Dal Knox to retain his title. Brother T, meanwhile, couldn't even make it to Unleashed after some "car trouble" left him stranded in another town.

Both men will be wanting to prove themselves after an unfortunate last week, but only one can win in Wainuiomata.

Nick Silver's Power Play X Open Challenge takes a surprising twist at Proving Grounds: "Dream Catcher" Phil Woodgate will be the one to issue it.

Silver injured his knee while wrestling "That Young Warrior" Paul Sayers at Newtown Knockout last week, and is unable to compete in Wainuiomata. Rather than let the challenge go to waste, "Dream Catcher" Phil Woodgate has announced that, as the longest serving member of the NZWPW roster, he will continue the challenge on behalf of Silver, starting this Saturday.

Silver has gone 3-2 in his open challenge series. Will Woodgate be able to keep up his winning percentage and overcome whoever attempts to prove themselves?

NZWPW Proving Grounds takes place this Saturday, February 23, at the Wainuiomata Memorial Hall on Queen Street, Wainuiomata. Click here for a map. Doors open at 7pm while the event starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are available on the door ($15 for adults, $10 for children). The card, subject to change, is listed below.
